Abstract A new measurement of the longitudinal spin asymmetry $A^{d}_{1}$ and the spin dependent structure function $g^{d}_{1}$ of the deuteron is presented in the $Q^{2}$ range from 1GeV$^{2}$ to 100GeV$^{2}$ and the $x$ range from 0.004 to 0.7. The data were taken in 2002 and 2003 with the COMPASS experiment at CERN, scattering 160 GeV$^{2}$ polarised muons off a large polarised $^{6}$LiD target. While significantly improving statistical accuracy in the low x region the data agree nicely with previous experiments.
