中國古代視杜鵑為一種悲鳥。相傳古代[[周朝]]末年蜀國有一國君名杜宇,又稱望帝,因為無能治水患,只好[[讓]]給一個治水有功的臣子,隱居山林,悲憤而死。死後化作杜鵑,日夜悲鳴,直到啼出血來。而杜鵑的血染到花上,那花就成了[[杜鵑花]]。因此,中國古代詩文只要寫到杜鵑,就是悲傷的象徵。
