a person standing next to a colorful quilt

This tutorial is for a quick baby quilt called Twister Quilt. I'm using stash, so it's geared toward that, but I will give you directions for using a purchased layer cake as well. First of all, you'll need 12 10" squares for a baby quilt. I also make a large lap quilt using 42 10" squares. If you're like me, and you're out to do a little stash busting, this is a great project. I pressed a bunch of KP kids fat quarters that I had and I cut two 10" squares from each fat quarter. Then, I cut a…

a close up of a quilt on a table

Here is Eileen's Twister quilt, she wanted custom quilting and said I could do whatever I wanted....except feathers! That's right, she's not a fan of feathers and I love to tease her about this. The background has an odd shape so it was a bit of a challenge to come up a non feather design. So I ended up quilting leaves and swirls in the background and SID around the twister block and filled them with swirls. I think this worked out to be a good compromise in design and introduced a feather…

A Twister Quilt Made without the Special Ruler~ I finished my twister quilt yesterday, and I absolutely love how it turned out. I was able to figure out a way to cut and piece this quilt without the special ruler, AND with minimal waste. To see how I cut it out, check out this post. To see how I pieced the blocks together, check out this post. This quilt is part of my March goal (link #17) for A Lovely Year of Finishes, which was to make something with my pink fabrics. It is nice to have it…

four pieces of paper are laid out on a table with one piece cut into squares

Whirlygig is a simple but beautiful block that is perfect for baby quilts. I had several charm squares left over from previous quilts. I decided to make whirlygigs. I also decided to document each step and I took a lot of pictures, one for every step. I hope that when some newbie quilter stumbles upon my blog, they will be encouraged to try this block. You need four charm squares (two of each color and background) to make one whirligig block. Think of it as a modified four-patch. the…

a colorful quilt is hanging on a wooden easel in front of a garage door

I have this rug I bought for my my child's room, while preparing the nursery. Not knowing what I was having, I wanted the room to be gender neutral. the walls were painted a sea green and I found this rug that reminded me of the sea. I love this rug. I love it so much, I decided I wanted to have a quilt to match. Lucky for me, I hosted a brick swap a few months ago, and the decided colors were lime green, blue and purple. Perfect! Plus, I have been wanting to try the lil' twister method for…

the scissors are laying on the cutting board next to the sewing machine and fabric pieces

I'm delighted to be here for the end of 2017 FAL Quarter 2 tutorials week to share something fun with you. At least, I hope you'll think it's fun. I don't know about you, but sometimes I just love working on simple, effective blocks. There are definitely seasons for complex patchwork with multiple techniques demanding much skill and attention, and then, there are times when I just want something that comes together swiftly. Not because I care any less, but often for the joy of seeing…
