Shinos are one of my favorite types of glazes, if not my most favorite. They are incredibly variable and incredibly cheap. There's no need for expensive colorants - let alone any colorants for that matter - to make interesting colors in the glaze. That's not to say that colorant's can't be added, but there really isn't any need. Maybe it's something to do with the sodium that migrates to the surface which works better when left for longer? Shino relies on sodium to flux (melt) on the surface at low temperatures of 870c which is why a heavily reduced atmosphere at these specific temperatures causes the sooty atmosphere to enter the surface melt, this is what we call carbon trapping.
