Ayla Mullen on Instagram: "Here's a glimpse into my inlay process✨ This video shows how I add color to most of my work using a traditional inlay technique called Mishima. I start with a bone dry pot that I've carved a design into at an earlier point. First, I cover the piece in underglaze, making sure to get color down into all the crevasses of my carved design. Then, I begin wiping away the color from the surface of the pot, revealing the carved design now filled in with color. It took meany years to get a consistent and cleanly inlaid design, especially since I do this process on stoneware clay rather than porcelain, meaning I have to work around the natural grittiness of the clay body. Some tips for trying Mishima: make sure you introduce as little water as possible to the process at Mishima Ceramics, Underglaze Techniques, Pottery Stamp, Pottery Videos, Pottery Designs, Clay Projects, Stoneware Clay, Art Ideas, Stoneware

Let me know what part of this demo helps you if you are trying it out! I’d love to know what questions you all have.

As a heads up: This technique took me a long to time get the hang of and practice is what I would prescribe to anyone struggling with doing an inlay technique like mishima.
For me it has been so rewarding to take my illustrations and put them on my pieces. I have always dabbled in many mediums of art and 2D was always a favorite, but it lacked the utilitarianism that I need. This way I can have both 2D and utility. I truly have so much fun exploring surface design on pottery. Thank you for taking your time as always and sharing it with me as I run my small business. 🫶🏼🌸 | Design On Pottery, Inlay Pottery, Mishima Pottery, Mishima Ceramics, Mediums Of Art, Pottery Inspo, What Questions, Surface Art, Ceramic Ideas

Josephine Mae Design on Instagram: "Using the ceramic technique “Mishima” to inlay the black underglaze into this lifted Tacoma truck design. 🛻✨ Mishima is a technique in ceramics where a contracting color of underglaze or slip is applied into the groves on an etched clay body. Then the extra is scraped or wiped away from the high points of the clay to reveal the groves left with the design. This inlay technique is used often for detailed fine illustrative works." Shawna Pincus on Instagram: "Quick tip for today! Did you know that water soluble (washable) markers will transfer from paper to clay? It works just like a temporary tattoo but for clay! This is great if you prefer a guide when carving, painting or for Mishima techniques. The ink from the market will burn away in the bisque so this isn’t a final finishing technique but it can be super helpful if you aren’t confident drawing directly on the clay or would like to easily repeat a design.
