La Crosse, Wis. - (WXOW) - The La Crosse Police Department and Oktoberfest U.S.A. announced Thursday afternoon that this year's Torchlight Parade would no longer allow candy or other items to be passed out during the parade.
Oktoberfest U.S.A. made the decision based on a recommendation from the La Crosse Police. In their announcement they cited growing concerns surrounding safety as kids every year were running into the street to get candy.
"Over the years we have noticed a big increase in a lot of kids get so excited, going into the street without looking," said Captain Avrie Schott. "We have vehicles moving, kids are running in front of moving vehicles."
The Maple Leaf Parade on Saturday afternoon will still be allowed to offer candy and other items, but only if they're handed to attendees. Nothing can be thrown from floats or parade units.
To counter the removal of candy from Thursday night's parade, more family fun activities are being promoted after Torchlight. The After Glow celebration at Copeland Field is free, featuring food, music and events.
