Marcus Aurelius Antoninus was born to an upper-class Roman family in A.D. 121 and was later adopted by the future emperor Antoninus Pius, whom he succeeded in 161. His reign was marked by a successful campaign against Parthia, but was overshadowed in later years by plague, an abortive revolt in the eastern provinces, and the deaths of friends and family, including his co-emperor Lucius Verus. A student of philosophy from his earliest youth, he was especially influenced by the first-century Stoic thinker Epictetus. His later reputation rests on his Meditations, written during his later years and never meant for formal publication. He died in 180, while campaigning against the barbarian tribes on Rome’s northern frontier.

Lowest quality - fell apart
Literally every other page in the book is detached. Lowest book binding quality, nothing is holding the pages and its disintegrating.

Reading through all of this took quite a long time, but, I think, is the best way to read it. It is meant to be imbibed a little bit at a time, and to think over the lesson proffered. There is much to ponder: ancient wisdom and also some ancient anachronisms (esp. some of their ideas about how the world worked), too. The Stoic philosophy is a very interesting, and also somewhat alien view to the money/fame based ideas in vogue today.

I very much like thinking about the Stoic way of life, and how it can be integrated into today's world, and I find that a lot of the practical ethics and psychology they talked about is easy to transport today. If you think that tranquility is something that is worthwhile in life, then this book will help you see a way towards that.

Large collection of Stoic practices and teachings. Also gives you a look into the the lives of some of the most famous Stoic practitioners. Ive seen complaints about the font size but if it were any larger the book would be huge. I've also seen complaints about this particular translation of the original writings. But I believe that that is just a matter of taste. I enjoy this interpretation because it's much more readable. It makes it more a book that you would sit down and enjoy, rather than a book that you're sweating over with the sinking feeling that you're about to fail your next exam on the subject.

We are around -180, and got a pack with six books by Marcus Aurelius, Epictetus and Seneca. Our ancient friends are reminding us that ALL in life is opinion and you can control your own thoughts to enjoy life to the fullest. The only way is to master ourselves studying philosophy to improve our reasoning capabilities. They urge us to be aware that life is wasting away daily. Thus, we should focus on quenching our thirst for knowledge to avoid the superfluous stuff flooding daily life. They defend that happiness is strong related to FREEDOM which is achieved by conquering intellectual independence. Here goes my favorite quote. “Observe constantly that all things take place by change, and accustom thyself to consider that the nature of the Universe loves nothing so much as to change the things which are and to make new things like them.” (Marcus Aurelius, from -121 to -180).

Got this on kindle for a very low price and it is great. It's formatted just like most kindle books, so easy reading. I read several complaints about the small font of the actual printed books, but the kindle version is fine.

A great combination of written works. Sadly it is not like the pictures on this book cover, in that it isn't a sleeve for a number of little books, nope, just one giant paper back book with small writing. But if the writing were any bigger it'd be a much fatter book. So this way its compact and still houses the good works within.

It reveals that mankind has a history for desiring self satisfaction and has no idea about his or her purpose on earth after four thousand of experience and this is reflected in the governments of all nations and their economies. The way is clear in these books and the holy bible!

These foundations of civilized thinking justified early university requirements for students to learn the Greek and Latin languages. Now available to the general public at a bargain basement price, and an ability to focus on the genius of the writings, rather than a struggle with the languages in which they were written.

Not a bad download, for the price, but regrettably only a "selection" of the Discourses of Epictetus are included. One would suppose, as I did, that this simply means that the collection is not comprehensive and does not include all of his surviving discourses, however. . .that's not the case.

After comparing this volume to another, it became evident that many of the included "Discourses" in this set are themselves incomplete, or simply missing huge paragraphs of his philosophy, with no sign that they've been removed.

I do not know whether the same is true of "Meditations," but after learning of this, I can't recommend this set as fully as I would like. For Epictetus and Seneca both, you'll do better with the Delphi Classics editions, which present their body of work in full. (Epictetus' work can be found in the Delphi Classics collection of Arrian, who preserved his teacher's philosophy in print)

The great deal (only £0.77) tempted me so much that I finally purchased another volume of ancient Roman writings!
I studied Latin and Greek at high school in Italy and you can't really enjoy the philosophical art of those authors when you are forced to study them. Therefore I'm now catching back with them again and I am truly loving them.
My Latin and Greek teacher would be proud of me!

I enjoy the readings, but from what I understood it is not something original. There were meant to be six books. Here are probably only fragments from the books. There are not author's names and I cannot tell who wrote what in each book.
