About the author
Marcus Aurelius Antoninus was born to an upper-class Roman family in A.D. 121 and was later adopted by the future emperor Antoninus Pius, whom he succeeded in 161. His reign was marked by a successful campaign against Parthia, but was overshadowed in later years by plague, an abortive revolt in the eastern provinces, and the deaths of friends and family, including his co-emperor Lucius Verus. A student of philosophy from his earliest youth, he was especially influenced by the first-century Stoic thinker Epictetus. His later reputation rests on his Meditations, written during his later years and never meant for formal publication. He died in 180, while campaigning against the barbarian tribes on Rome’s northern frontier.

I very much like thinking about the Stoic way of life, and how it can be integrated into today's world, and I find that a lot of the practical ethics and psychology they talked about is easy to transport today. If you think that tranquility is something that is worthwhile in life, then this book will help you see a way towards that.
After comparing this volume to another, it became evident that many of the included "Discourses" in this set are themselves incomplete, or simply missing huge paragraphs of his philosophy, with no sign that they've been removed.
I do not know whether the same is true of "Meditations," but after learning of this, I can't recommend this set as fully as I would like. For Epictetus and Seneca both, you'll do better with the Delphi Classics editions, which present their body of work in full. (Epictetus' work can be found in the Delphi Classics collection of Arrian, who preserved his teacher's philosophy in print)

I studied Latin and Greek at high school in Italy and you can't really enjoy the philosophical art of those authors when you are forced to study them. Therefore I'm now catching back with them again and I am truly loving them.
My Latin and Greek teacher would be proud of me!
