Motivation
[edit]We have a property official name (P1448) which enables to state references, sources, determiner, original official form, time limits (since and to) etc. of the official name (which is usually used as a label at least in one language). This option compensates for the drawback that "label" and "aliases" are "properties" that cannot have their own qualifiers or references.
For some types of unofficial names, we have (for example) properties nickname (P1449) and pseudonym (P742) here. These properties are mainly intended for alternative names of people, for whom we assume that they always also have their official name. However, there are many types of entities that usually do not have any official name at all, but sometimes there is an established and even widely used unofficial name for them. Such a name is often used as an item label or as an item alias. With these names, it is also necessary to be able to document their use and their usual form, possibly the time and circumstances of their creation or use, etc. with references. Some of such names may be widely and officially used almost as if they were official names, others may be more slang, casual or occasional. Especially for those unofficial names that fulfill the role of common and usual naming, nickname (P1449) is inappropriate. --ŠJů (talk) 10:41, 25 August 2023 (UTC)
Discussion
[edit]- Comment This is what the aliases field is for, no? Is the intent to provide a property to document these aliases somehow? ArthurPSmith (talk) 21:13, 25 August 2023 (UTC)
- Comment If the name isn't official, then shouldn't it just be name (P2561)? -wd-Ryan (Talk/Edits) 22:28, 25 August 2023 (UTC)
- It might be quite sufficient (possibly with some qualifier), I think? I’m afraid the examples above consist of quite different groups. The first one is just a plain name, albeit an unofficial one, name (P2561) would be quite usable, I guess. (Even though we should ensure everyone understands that this might be just a common, unofficial name…) The second one is… a slang name, a nickname really, just not for a person but for a region; name (P2561) would be… borderline usable? The third one is not a name at all, it’s just a slang word in a single language, so I don’t think the item should have any name-related property at all. The fourth one… I’m not sure but I’d say it’s a similar case, it’s not really a “name”, its just a “description”; having a label is enough, no need for a special name property. The fifth one… probably the same as the first one, i.e. name (P2561) could suffice even though it is unofficial? --Mormegil (talk) 15:41, 29 August 2023 (UTC)
- Oppose in the form this proposal is made. I can support it if the intention is to replace one or more of the already existing properties. /ℇsquilo 06:04, 30 August 2023 (UTC)
- Comment While using a property has advantages over a label, especially the mul language code, I can't see much advantage over name (P2561). Indeed adding "unofficial name" as an alias to that with some advice there and at official name (P1448) seems preferable to a new property. Vicarage (talk) 06:26, 30 August 2023 (UTC)
- I also don't see the advantages over name (P2561) for those cases where no existing property does the job. ChristianKl ❪✉❫ 13:13, 9 September 2023 (UTC)
- Oppose I think name (P2561) is enough. If you want to state clearly that this name is unofficial, you can use qualifier nature of statement (P5102) with value unofficial (Q29509080). --Tinker Bell ★ ♥ 15:42, 13 September 2023 (UTC)
Not done Given this discussion is stale and no one supports it, I am going to close this discussion. Midleading (talk) 03:10, 11 December 2023 (UTC)
