Purification using Algae
Europe's water bodies are polluted. Each day, up to 70,000 chemicals are used in industries and agriculture. Researchers at UDE have developed a method to purify water using chemically modified diatom fossils to remove contaminants.

The UDE Centre for Water and Environmental Research (ZWU) has been a pioneer in water and environmental research since its establishment in 2003. Whether it's urbanisation and biodiversity, climate change, or the availability and quality of water – the more than 300 scientists at the ZWU tackle these issues in an interdisciplinary manner.

Even as a child, Julian Enß marveled at the diversity of creatures in streams - today he conducts research in aquatic ecology, is a member of the Center for Water and Environmental Research (ZWU) and also introduces non-scientists to aquatic species.
