Pain

Chronic pain is a disabling condition that affects millions of people in the US. David Julius, PhD, professor and chair of the UCSF Department of Physiology, was awarded the 2020 Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences “for discovering molecules, cells, and mechanisms underlying pain sensation.” Knowledge gained from research in labs such as UCSF’s Pain and Addiction Research Center can yield new approaches for pain treatment and decrease the prevalence and consequences of addiction.
