Yes, you do need a demat account to buy stocks in India. A demat account is an electronic account that holds your securities, such as stocks. It is mandatory to have a demat account to invest in shares in India as per the guidelines of the SEBI. When you buy stocks, they are credited to your demat account and when you sell them, they are debited from the account.

You can start your stock investment journey in 3 easy steps:

1. PAN Card for identity proof
2. Aadhaar, Passport, Voter ID, Driving License or any other authorised photo identity for address proof
3. A latest passport-size photograph
4. Signature on a white paper (signature should match with the one on your PAN card)
5. Income Tax Returns (ITR) statement or bank statements from the last 6 months for income proof
6. Cancelled cheque, passbook for the last 6 months as bank proof
