Groundwater and the Swedish Water Framework Directive implementation
SGU has an important role in the implementation of the Water Framework Directive through regulations, guidance and data supply.
Water is one of our most important natural resources and our most important food. Access to clean water is important for everyone in our society. SGU's information on groundwater constitutes an important basis in the planning of society's water supply. It is also one of the prerequisites for us in Sweden to be able to achieve the environmental quality goal "Groundwater of good quality" and contributes to us being able to meet the requirements set in the EC framework directive for water. In addition, groundwater information is used in matters relating to land use and spatial planning in general, for example as a basis for environmental impact assessments, for action programs for the protection of groundwater and in the construction of landfills, roads, industries and more.
