NAME OF LEARNER: _____________________________________________________ SCORE: _______________

LEARNING AREA GRADE-LEVEL AND SECTION: _____________________________ DATE: ________________

Most essential Learning Competencies:

At the end of this learning activity, you should be able to
1. gathers statistical data. (M7SP-IVb-1); and
2. organizes data in a frequency distribution table (M7SP-IVc-1).

Have you ever wondered how the government identifies the recipients of the Social Amelioration Program?
How did the DSWD identify the grantees for 4P’s beneficiaries? These questions can be answered if we collect data.

When conducting research, it would be impossible to collect data from every individual in a population. So,
instead of taking data from a whole population, a small group that will represent the population is used. Getting only
a sample from the population can lessen the expenses and increase the speed of data gathering.

GATHERING OF DATA

Data collection is the process of getting information from a population or sample. Data can be collected through
observation, experimentation, or conducting censuses or surveys. These data are called primary data. Data obtained
from those already published by the government, industries, or individual sources are called secondary data.

The following are the methods in collecting data:

Direct or Interview Method ➢ It is used in conducting surveys. Example: A certain telecommunication

➢ It is done when a person solicits company would ask a caller to rate their
information from another person either by services after the latter questions about her
telephone or in-person. The interviewer is the internet connectivity.
person gathering the data, while the
interviewee is the person being interviewed.
Indirect or Questionnaire ➢ It is also used in conducting surveys. Example: Customers in a restaurant were

individuals then answer the questionnaire
and return it to the researcher.
Observation Method ➢ In this method, the researcher observes the Example: A researcher would like to know
behavior of the participants. The investigator the effect of too much water and sunlight

subject is the person being observed.
➢ It makes use of the human senses.

1
Experiment Method ➢ It is used to determine the cause-and-effect Example: Researchers would make some
relationship of certain phenomena under tests to determine which vaccine will be
controlled conditions. more effective to be immune from the virus
before releasing it to the public.
Registration Method ➢ In this method, information can be Example: The researcher will identify the
gathered from documents or reports which number of cases, recoveries, and deaths of
are released by the government or any COVID-19 in a day as reported by the
institution. Department of Health (DOH).

One way of organizing data is by constructing a frequency distribution table. A tally mark is used to record how
often a particular score or number occurs. The number of times a score or number appears is called the frequency.

To construct a frequency distribution table:

a. list the scores or numbers from highest to lowest (or lowest to highest),
b. use tally marks to record how often each score or number appears, and
c. count the marks and record it in the frequency column.

Example 1. Construct a frequency distribution table for this set of scores.

35 33 28 34 30 35 35 35 28 29
34 27 27 31 31 35 30 34 32 36
SCORE TALLY FREQUENCY
36 l 1
35 llll 5
34 lll 3
33 l 1
32 l 1
31 ll 2
30 ll 2
29 l 1
28 ll 2
27 ll 2
Total n = 20 n = 20

The result shows that there are more students who got a score of 30 and above than those who got below 30.
Example 2. Given the set of data, construct a frequency table using intervals of 5 (ci=5) and answer the questions that
follow.
Class Interval (ci= 5) Tally Frequency
45-49 lII 3
40-44 llll 4
35-39 lllI 5
30-34 IIIl - I 6
25-29 IIIl 5
20-24 llll - ll 7
Total n = 30 n = 30

1. Which interval has the highest frequency? ________________________

2. What is the highest frequency? ________________________ Answers:
3. What is the least frequency? ________________________ 1. 20-24
4. Which interval has frequency lesser than 4? ________________________ 2. 7
5. Which intervals have an equal frequency? ________________________ 3. 3
4. 45-49
5. 25-29 and 35-39

2
Determine the appropriate method in gathering the data.

Given Answer

University.
2. The total number of licensed doctors in the Philippines
3. Effects of computers in the academic performance of the
students
4. Number of registered jeepneys in Legazpi City
5. Most saleable mobile phone brand

Use the frequency table to answer the questions that follow then complete the table.
Selected students were asked about their favorite color and the results were shown below.
