Critics Consensus

Troll doesn't rewrite the monster movie rulebooks -- but with mythology this rich and action this exciting, it doesn't have to.

Audience Says

Troll's decent visual effects aren't enough of a reason to sit through its predictable story, cheesy dialogue, and uneven acting.

Noel Murray Los Angeles Times “Troll” succeeds by getting back to basics. Like way, way back — all the way to the Old Norse. Dec 16, 2022 Full Review Meagan Navarro Bloody Disgusting While light on narrative, it’s when director Roar Uthaug embraces the film's monster that Troll reveals its magic. Rated: 2.5/5 Dec 1, 2022 Full Review Joshua Polanski Boston Hassle Troll plays its premise too seriously to be any fun and it lacks any socio-critical muster to be an effective disaster film. Jul 11, 2024 Full Review Lee Zumpe Tampa Bay Newspapers “Troll” is as much fun as any of the recent films in Legendary Pictures’ MonsterVerse. Oct 26, 2023 Full Review Aaron Phillips But Why Tho? A Geek Community With a perfect run time, some superb visuals, and a throughline of some brilliant mythology, Troll deserves to be watched. Rated: 7.5/10 Jan 4, 2023 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies That often dismissed and maligned word “fun” defines “Troll” in a nutshell. It’s an eye-popping genre flick that delivers exactly what you expect from it. Nothing more; nothing less. Rated: 4/5 Dec 29, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews

Gustavo R Norwegian King Kong , except is a troll. Interesting take of this mythological creature, good special effects 🍿🍿🍿/5 Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/03/24 Full Review Alec S Great special effects, but the acting is weak, the storyline clichéd, the characters one-dimensional and the plot full of holes. A palaeontologist goes in search of strange phenomena after a mining disaster, but she does scarcely a minute's worth of analysis before arriving at a conclusion - skepticism. An elderly eccentric (conveniently the scientist's dad) knows the answer. However, his outspokenness previously saw him dismissed as 'loony', so no one believes him. Once the eccentric's suspicions come to fruition, the scientist downplays the evidence, but then bureaucrats stifle the investigation and instead the military are engaged. Thereafter the clichés keep rolling in like a production line... Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/20/24 Full Review Gisele H As a big fan of Edvard Grieg I was hoping to see in the credits some indication of his famous work Hall of the Mountain King to no avail, so can't give this show five stars. Some visuals quite stunning other aspects somewhat missed point Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 08/04/24 Full Review Jeremy H It was an entertaining movie, way better than watching the Acolyte. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/15/24 Full Review Michael Antony A Mikey’s Movie Review: Troll (2022) This Norwegian language creature feature might not set the world on fire, but it could turn a few heads in Hollywood… Directed by Roar Uthaug (Tomb Raider) with tongue firmly in cheek but plenty of style and gorgeous cinematography, it delivers exactly what you’d expect from a movie about a giant Troll rampaging towards Oslo. Clichéd as hell, it borrows heavily from Godzilla, King Kong, Jurassic Park et al, and adds a sprinkle of Roland Emmerich’s disaster schtick dialogue for good measure. Although it never takes itself too seriously, it does have a little heart thanks to some great interplay between the leads. Every character is a one-dimensional caricature but Ine Marie Wilmann is an engaging presence, and her scenes with Gard B. Eidsvold (an estranged daughter/father dynamic) are a joy. US casting agents should take note! For such a low budget movie the VFX are stunning. Certainly as impressive as anything Marvel have put out the last few years. If you’ve a soft spot for this genre you should definately check it out. It won’t change your life, but you might find yourself 100 minutes of guilty pleasure… Mikey’s Movie Rating: 3/5* Rated 3 out of 5 stars 06/09/24 Full Review Read all reviews
