Critics Consensus

Duchess is chauvinism dressed up in women's clothes, but much less exciting.

Sara Michelle Fetters MovieFreak.com None of it mattered, and for all the slit throats, close calls, electric shocks, and broken bones, Marshall’s latest fires too many blanks to be of any consequence. Rated: 2/4 Aug 13, 2024 Full Review Brian Tallerico RogerEbert.com “Atrocious” might have been a better title. Rated: .5/4 Aug 12, 2024 Full Review Tim Robey Daily Telegraph (UK) The sub-sub-Scarface bursts of bullet-ridden action just about keep this thing from grinding to a halt, but it’s leering, cruddy and retrograde to the bitter end. Rated: 3/5 Aug 21, 2024 Full Review Kevin Harley Radio Times Even if Marshall handles the action proficiently, he never convinces us to care who's getting their throat gouged open next. Ewan B I can't relate to this kind chavaunism and toxic masculinity anymore, I've seen so many of these. The best gangster films have authenticity, this has none, just gratuitous violence and obviousness. I give it one star for the good looking and long legged heroine. It's a shame she didn't take over the men from the get go. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 11/10/24 Full Review Chris K Unintelligible mumbling. Actors? Really? Peeling onions is a better use of your time. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 10/25/24 Full Review Daniel B One of the worst action movies ever ... what a waste of time Rated 1 out of 5 stars 10/17/24 Full Review gina S Being a Girl from North East London, her accent grated a little bit but it’s also not the worst I’ve heard. Over all I bloody loved it. Cast was good, story line wasn’t a new theme but one I love and the strong female lead and focus was cool….. Pertwee was my fav. I’m kinda hoping for a Duchess 2 🙋🏼‍♀️. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 10/13/24 Full Review Darren D Neil Marshall's latest "Duchess" comes off like a 1980's low budget revenge flicks that also cheekily plays out like an early Guy Ritchie movie between the shootouts that's equal to the foul language from the protagonists mouth. From petty crimes to international crimes, Charlotte Kirk makes for an entertaining lead that's out for revenge, & Kirk's performance for her role suits the movie perfectly fine for out it plays itself out. While the violence is bloody & fun, the shootouts are capable, the hand to hand combat is slightly not on the same level as noticeable it is during the final confrontation, not to say I didn't enjoy the 2 vs 1 elevator fight. Not to say I didn't have some fun with "Duchess" but there's an element I can't quite figure out that's missing to hold my attention, maybe the being pulled back in ending wasn't needed. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 10/10/24 Full Review Alan L A hard-boiled fantasy: Neil Marshall's "Duchess" is a refreshing action-thriller with a strong female lead. We land in a gritty and glitzy world in a character-driven double-crosser balanced by hard-boiled humor. The film is self-conscious enough not to take itself too seriously, making it a fun and engaging watch. Backed by strong performances of supporting characters, Charlotte Kirk's performance as the titular character is captivating, and her point of view drives the picture with no remorse, as it should be! "Duchess" is a guilty pleasure. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/08/24 Full Review Read all reviews
