What to Know

Critics Consensus

Amsterdam has a bunch of big stars and a very busy plot, all of which amounts to painfully less than the sum of its dazzling parts.

Audience Says

Amsterdam can be hard to follow, but the cast makes it easy to watch -- and the story has some interesting messages if you're paying attention.

Jordan Hoffman AV Club Like a sloppy guy at a bar telling a farfetched tale Oct 19, 2022 Full Review Richard Brody New Yorker May “Amsterdam” ’s melodramatic sentimentality be forgiven; not many films of such exuberance, since the time of Chaplin, have been fuelled by such rage. Oct 11, 2022 Full Review Richard Lawson Vanity Fair Russell’s conclusions are maudlin, but also curiously effective -- the film’s broad earnestness and sappy entreaties, prove hard to dismiss. Oct 10, 2022 Full Review Branyan Towe Loud and Clear Reviews This film misses the mark so often, but at least the leads salvage as much as they can, along with some other elements that keep it from being among the worst films ever made. Rated: 2.5/5 Jul 29, 2024 Full Review Brittany Patrice Witherspoon Pop Culture Reviews I have to wonder how a film full of great stars and such a compelling story (on paper) could result in such an uninspiring mess, but that’s what happens when a filmmaker prioritizes star power over writing. Rated: 1/5 Jul 25, 2024 Full Review Joshua Polanski Boston Hassle A moralizing version of [a] great political thriller ... I suspect that sounds like an ill-advised way to spend an evening. Orlando V I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. I've been waiting for a descent murder mystery since Knives Out and the movie satisfied my hunger. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/26/22 Full Review GL Great movie, Christian Bale was great! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/18/22 Full Review Totally let down Despite some good acting, the script wandered vaguely and you are left to try to piece together snippets that make no other sense and wonder why it is not over yet. Waste of talent and viewer time. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 11/09/22 Full Review V. O. Cameos can't save this one. Story too drawn out. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 11/09/22 Full Review Edward C I'm very sorry this movie hasn't done well at the box office, because it's excellent. Yes, it uses the well-worn trope of "protagonist(s) are accused of crime they did not commit, and must find a way to clear their names". But it proceeds in a rapid, original and quirky way. Perhaps the humor is too subtle for American audiences, but I found it both cerebral and hilarious. Christian Bale really channels his Peter Falk. The characters all played their parts well. One glaring omission so far of all the reviews I have read is the currently political timeliness embedded in a movie set in 1933. MAGA Repugnicans should take note this movie takes aim at them.
