Huge result for Lyon at Bernabeu

Lyon stunned Real Madrid on Wednesday night with a 2-1 aggregate victory in the Champions League at the Bernabeu stadium. Despite Madrid’s 250 million euros summer spending spree, Miralem Pjanic’s goal 15 minutes from time put Olympique Lyonnais through to the quarter finals.

Although the French team led 1-0 after the first leg, Cristiano Ronaldo levelled the game after six minutes.

It was 75 minutes before Lyon managed to retake the lead after fighting off constant pressure from the Spanish team.

They missed out 26 minutes in when Argentine player Gonzalo Higuain missed a chance. He could have had a hat-trick, but his efforts were denied by Lyonnais keeper Hugo Lloris and the woodwork.

During the post-match interviews Real player José María Gutiérrez Hernández said they didn’t know how to “kill them off”.

He said they have to be more of a team, rather than individual players.

Real’s Manager Manuel Pellegrini was expected to take his team all the way to the final, which this year will be held at Madrid’s Bernabeu stadium.

However Lyon held on and stopped Madrid at the same stage of the competition at which they faltered last year.
