Kosovo series, part 1/5

Issued on:

Kosovo gained its autonomy from Serbia with Nato support in 1999. Some 10,000 Albanians and 2,000 Serbs died in the conflict. Serbia doesn’t recognise Kosovo as an independent state, but efforts have accelerated in recent years to normalise relations between the two countries. A court to try former Albanian fighters for alleged war crimes has been agreed by the Kosovar government - and a law to give Serb communities in Kosovo greater autonomy has been brought in. As Thomas Lowe finds in the first of RFI’s series on Kosovo, both have been met with a good deal of opposition.
