Maggie Dwyer is a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in the Centre of African Studies at the University of Edinburgh. Her research focuses on conflict, security, and politics in West Africa. She is particularly interested in African armed forces and international security interventions. Dr Dwyer is the Principle Investigator for an ESRC funded project titled 'Return from Peacekeeping: Mission Effects on Veterans, States, and Communities' (funded from 2019-2023).
She is also part of the core research team for the Norwegian Research Council funded project 'Impacts of Security Force Assistance on State Fragility,' led by Dr Øystein H. Rolandsen at PRIO. Dr Dwyer has published her work on issues related to peace and security in Africa in a wide range of journals including African Affairs, Third World Quarterly, Conflict Security and Development, and Policing & Society. She is also author of the book 'Soldiers in Revolt: Army Munities in Africa' (Oxford University Press, 2018).
