Portrait of a Woman, probably a member of the Van Beresteyn Family, by Rembrandt van Rijn. 1632, oil on canvas. In the collection of The MetMuseum, NYC.This portrait is a pendant to the Portrait of a Man (next pin). If that man is Cornelis van Beresteyn, then this woman must be his second wife, Corvina van Hofdyck (1602–1667). Her pose, including the precise positions of the hands (one holding an ostrich fan), repeats that of her mother-in-law as depicted by Jacob Willemsz. Delff in 1592.

Open robe of Spitalfields silk w/ fitted back construction a l'Anglaise, CF hook & eye closure edged w/ passementerie & silk flowers to pleated décolleté, elbows, double engageante sleeves & to CF skirt opening, petticoat front w/ deep double draped & peated furbelows w/ gathered & pleated band to upper edge, entirely constructed of Spitalfields silk brocaded broché, point de rentrée, twill design on tabby ground. Provenance: Faith Savage Waldo.
Linen stays w/ baleen boning, kid leather trim, eyelets reinforced w/ wrapped kid leather band, B 30", W 26", L 10.5"-14.5", (laces N/I, leather binding/facing details & laces at eyelets worn/discolored, 2.25" missing leather binding right of CB top opening, discoloration esp. to hem, tiny-1.25" spot stains, 0.75" tear in linen right SH blade) excellent.

Linen whalebone stays w/ steel under bust form & velum underarm reinforcements, stay channels in type of highly unusual quilted stitch, B 31", W 24", L 9"-14.5", (laces N/I, broad stains & discoloration throughout, velum stiff & cracking, tiny-0.25" wear holes to all bindings, 1" seam opening & 0.25" tear CF top edge at busk, 0.5" hole in lining) very good.
