Raku generally refers to a type of low-firing process that was inspired by traditional Japanese raku firing. Western-style raku usually involves removing pottery from the kiln while at bright red heat and placing it into containers with combustible materials. Once the materials ignite, the containers are closed. This produces an intense reduction atmosphere which affects the colors in glazes and clay bodies. Mondays is a two-woman studio producing hand-built tableware and sculptural vessels and objects. Raku is created by using a unique firing process that creates unpredictable patterns and colors. After the first firing, the glazed pottery is placed in a can filled with combustible materials. The heat from the just fired pottery causes the materials to catch fire. The oxygen is drawn out of the pottery and glaze.
