Burying your tomato stems like this will encourage better root systems and stronger plants. I plant on both sides of my trellis, one plant for each post. 1. Dig a hole in the center of the trellis at each post 2. The hole should be angled, becoming shallower as it reaches the post 3. Place the tomato seedling in so that it lays almost horizontal on the ground 4. Snip off any branches below the soil level 5. Fill in the hole 6. Wait one or two days for the tomato plant to turn itself toward the sky. Tie it (gently) to the post. I like to use strips of soft fabric like from a t-shirt. Happy planting, friends!" It’s an exciting day! I can finally plant my tomatoes and the many companion plants I interplant with them, now the last chance of frost has passed 😊🙌🏻

To get started, I measure out the bed and space my tomatoes at 45cm apart and dig a deep hole so I can add fresh compost underneath the plant as a little pocket of fertility. 🪱

I then water the hole to ensure the plants are well watered to minimise transplant shock, and tie a large loop in some strong garden twine which I place underneath the root ball of the plant so that it anchors it in place. ⚓️🌱

I remove any lower leaves from the plant to avoid them coming into contact with the soils surface, as I’ll be planting it deep to promote a stronger root system. We help you grow. on Instagram: "One of our favorite ways to trellis big, vining tomatoes is with string and a few tomato clips - that’s it! When you transplant your tomato, you can either bury the string underneath your tomato to secure it in the ground, or tie the string to a stake and press into the soil.

Then, tie the other end of the string to a simple structure above the tomato plant made of 2x4 lumber or metal conduit. Both are relatively inexpensive at most hardware stores. Our setup cost $50 to make and grows about 12 huge vining tomatoes.

Every 1’ (0.3m) or so, snap a tomato clip (which you can find at most nurseries) to the string and around your tomato’s main stem. As the tomato grows, you may want to also prune off any side shoots that grow out, but this is optional.
