Plastic fusing

Concord Art Association took me on last week to give a demo class regarding my technique fusing plastic bags. It was a fabulous success with eager, inquisitive participants. I look forward to being asked back.

This is a fully wearable and comfortable unlined plastic coat. Uncounted layers upon layers of fused and sewn plastic bags , plastic produce net bags, and newsprint image transfers. 100% plastic bags--- even the cotton sewing thread was old. A new generation of sustainably minded designers is pioneering ways of using recycled plastic as a raw material, as concern over pollution increases.

This project is one which has evolved out of my recent experiments with fused plastic. It’s a way of recycling old crayons and plastic bags creatively and I love the finished ‘leaf-like’ feel of these. The finished leaves can be used for a wide range of purposes, or alternatively you could cut the fused plastic sheets up into any shape you like.
