A fun way to add some hands-on activities to your American pioneer study is to make some period recipes with your tweens. Middle schoolers will enjoy seeing what those who traveled west ate on their journey and after they settled on the prairie. My kids thought it was great to cook johnnycakes as part of their American history studies.
