The Montessori Birthday Walk — Home and on the Way

The Montessori birthday celebration known as the Montessori birthday walk is a great way to make the abstract concept of birthdays more concrete for children. At one year Yitzchak is a bit young to understand that but it was still a meaningful way to celebrate his birthday.

I put pictures around each ray from each month of the year. This year I added the around the year playsilk from @sarahssilks (OnTheWay10 gives a discount). I love it as a background. My only complaint is I wish the seasons were the other way as we always walked counterclockwise since that’s how the Earth turns, but I get why they’re this way and it’s beautiful instead of just our rug as the background! Then we walk around the Sun the number of times the birthday child is turning. Here my daughter was turning one so we helped her walk 1 time while singing “the Earth goes round the Sun” to the tune Felt Sun, Fake Candle, Fake Candles, Birthday Traditions, Turning One, Peaceful Parenting, Birthday Pictures, A Background, The Seasons

On the Montessori Celebration of Life, Montessori schools put together a similar setup representing the year (months, seasons) around something that represents the sun (a candle usually). When we adapted it for our home we used pictures instead. One picture per month-ish placed around a sun made of felt. You can tell how much she loves it and how special it feels. Looking at the pictures, talking about them, remembering her favorite parts of her recent year of life. And then talking about what things we would love to do again.
