Staying at home during early labor regardless of your birthing center of choice is key for a few reasons. 1. When you’re at home you’re able to shut off your frontal cortex. All of your senses are calm and at ease because it’s a familiar environment. This can help labor progress faster. 2. Your home = your rules. You can eat, move, be touched, not be touched to your hearts delight. Autonomy and agency over your body is vital in making you feel safe during labor. 3. If you’re at home and your water breaks, your first instinct is probably to rush off to the hospital. But maybe you shouldn’t...
First, take a deep breath and then assess using TACO.

T - Time ⏰
Note the exact time your water breaks. This helps your healthcare provider track the labor progression.

A - Amount 💧
Estimate how much fluid has come out. Is it a trickle or a gush?

C - Color 🎨
Observe the color of the fluid. It should be clear or pale yellow. If it’s greenish or brown, contact your healthcare provider immediately.

O - Odor 👃
Notice any smell. Normal amniotic fluid should have a mild odor. If there’s a foul smell, inform your doctor right away.
