Strelitzia nicolai, the giant bird of paradise (also known as banana leaf plant or banana palm), can be grown outside in your garden landscape or indoors as a houseplant. We have this plant in stock at Flora Grubb Gardens nursery in San Francisco.

Strelitzia nicolai (Giant White Bird of Paradise) - The Nicolai is the large form of the common 'Bird of Paradise'. Nicolai wil grow to about 6m tall, and is very hardy and reasonably drought tolerant. Great as a two-storey screening plant in suburban gardens.

Strelitzia nicolai produces dark, boat-shaped bracts with vivid petals. Ideal for Australian climate, the Giant White Bird of Paradise is a fantastic garden companion.

Its grand size gives it the name 'Giant White Bird Of Paradise', as it can grow to great heights (up to 16 feet!) , but the grace and understated grandeur of its sinuous shape is what makes it such a compelling house plant (it can have a summer holiday outdoors but won't survive our worst winters).
