How to gather fabric:
1. Set your machine to loose tension, and medium-long stitch length
2. Use a contrasting coloured thread to stitch a line of sewing down your seam allowance. Do not backstitch, and leave the thread tails long. 
3. Using a coloured thread matching your fabric, stitch a line of sewing half way between your seam allowance and edge of the fabric. Do not backstitch, and leave the thread tails long. 
4. Hold onto the thread from both lines of sewing from the same side of fabric. This is important in making the gathering process as easy as possible.
