Fashion through the 1800s

Last week's photo of the day theme was evening wear. With prom season right around the corner and so many winter balls and galas taking place, it is the perfect time to look at the most glamorous of all vintage evening gowns and dresses. We can't forget the gentlemen, too, who always look so fine

The 1900s, known as both the Edwardian era and La Belle Époque was a beautiful era for dresses. The invention of the "health corset," later called the S-blend corset, altered the shape of women's 1900s dresses from flat and vertical to curvy. The bust was thrust forward, the back curved inward, and the hips rounded.

It's made of duchess silk satin. Bodice is lined with cotton and covered with cotton bobbinet. All bodice seams are boned. Skirt is faced with silk satin and it has two cotton bobbinnet over layers. White tulle layer is covered with c. 7000 silver sequins, individually attached. Black tulle has a Greek key appliqué that I cut out of silk velvet and hand stitched in place. And of course I have fallen in love with the Edwardian dresses in Downton Abbey. Evening dress ca. 1905

Dreamy white cotton eyelet lace dress with a lining in soft cotton is styled from the Edwardian era. The loose bodice buttons in the back and the skirt gets progressively fuller with flounces of the eyelet. Satin ribbon trims the flounced length sleeves and the waist is finished with a buttoned belt, which is included.
