If you don’t know, a Pepper’s Ghost is a type of special effect that uses reflections to create the illusion of something that isn’t really there. It was made popular in the late 1800s by John Pepper and that’s where the name comes from. Although it sounds very old-timey, the term is still used today. Sometimes it’s marketed with the term “hologram” since we all sort of know from movies what that means. However, if you want to find out more about this specific effect, it’s best to search for the term “Pepper’s Ghost” instead. These are a charming alternative to those classic paper bag snowflakes — with no cutting required. I use an assortment of different sized doilies ranging from 4” to 12” and am using 6 doilies per snowflake. For glue I’m using a natural starch-based glue stick. At the end of the season you can store for future years (I just gently pull one section apart so that it folds up flat again) or you can recycle them. I reuse the same stash every holiday season and just add new ones each year.
