1. Does getting a flu shot give you the flu?

   No!

   That’s a myth. Flu shots contain either an unactivated version of the flu or a substance designed to trick your body into thinking it’s the flu. Rarely, after getting the flu shot, some people experience side effects from the vaccine activating their immune system — but they're mild and should subside quickly.

2. Do you really need a flu shot if you’re healthy?

   Yes!

   The flu shot lowers your risk of getting the flu. If you catch the flu anyway, the vaccine will make you less symptomatic and less contagious. When enough people get the flu shot, it helps build herd immunity, which protects everyone and prevents flu outbreaks.

3. Should you get the flu shot every year?

   Yes!

   It’s important to get a flu shot every flu season. With rare exceptions, everyone over the age of 6 months should receive the flu vaccine annually since different strains of the flu virus (influenza) circulate each year and a flu shot is the most effective way to protect yourself.

4. It’s just the flu. How bad can it be?

   The flu can be life-threatening for anyone, especially babies, older adults, and people with chronic illnesses or weakened immune systems. It is also possible to contract the flu and COVID-19 at the same time, which increases the risk of serious complications.

5. Are flu shots covered by health insurance?

   Yes!

7. If I’m over 65+, why should I get the high dose vaccine?

   Adults 65 years and older are at higher risk of developing serious complications from the flu, especially if you have a chronic health condition, but there’s good news! Getting the flu shot lessens your likelihood of catching the flu and, if you catch the flu, it lessens the symptoms and helps protect you from serious consequences.
