Imagine you’re walking the perfectly manicured streets of Grosvenor Square in London. The homes are gilded, the pedestrians are well-heeled, and … it’s 1813. Bridgerton Season 1 opens the doors of these alluring houses, allowing a peek inside the drawing rooms (and bedrooms) of the highborn. 

Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor) is our guide into this lavish take on Regency-era Mayfair, executive produced by Shonda Rhimes. Daphne is the oldest daughter of eight gorgeous siblings, who are all named in alphabetical order. There are balls to attend, orchestral pop covers to step to, and eligible noblemen to impress. Daphne, dubbed the “diamond” of the 1813 season by Queen Charlotte (Golda Rosheuvel), should have her pick of charming bachelors. But a series of mishaps — from those caused by overprotective eldest brother Lord Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey) to ungentlemanly advances from an unseemly baron (Jamie Beamish) — put Daphne in an unenviable position. 

Her salvation? A marriage to the the most desired aristocrat of them all: Simon Basset (Regé-Jean Page), the Duke of Hastings. Although the newlyweds burn for each other, secrets they’ve kept threaten to tear them apart. Daphne, who is desperate to re-create a family as bustling as her own, has no idea Simon swore to never have children. 

As the Duke and Duchess figure out the contours of their relationship, a cunning scandal sheet author by the name of Lady Whistledown emerges in London. She quickly becomes the talk of the ton — and she often has her sights set on the popular Bridgerton family, along with their associates. Season 1, Episode 1

“Diamond of the First Water”

Grosvenor Square, 1813.

Lady Whistledown (voiced by Julie Andrews) has the piping hot tea, and she’s spilling it all over London. Her poison pen — quill? — is aimed at high society this season, with the most acid reserved for the “tasteless, tactless” Lady Featherington (Polly Walker) and her three daughters, Philipa (Harriet Cains), Prudence (Bessie Carter), and Penelope (Nicola Coughlan). The Bridgerton family gets much better reviews from Lady Whistledown, particularly their eldest daughter, Daphne, who also manages to elicit the only positive reaction of the season from Queen Charlotte (Golda Rosheuvel). Daphne and her widowed mom (Ruth Gemmell) are thrilled, but Daphne’s sister, Eloise (Claudia Jessie), points out that Daphne now has a target on her back. 

It looks like Daphne’s set to own the social season and nab herself a highly eligible husband, but enter a new rival: Marina Thompson (Ruby Barker), a “distant cousin” of the Featheringtons. Before she arrives, the Featheringtons assume she won’t be any competition, since she’s straight from the country, but to their horror, she turns out to be gorgeous and charming.

Another key player also arrives in town. Simon Basset, the Duke of Hastings, returns to deal with his father’s affairs after his death. Before he can even put away his hip flask and dismount his horse, Lady Danbury (Adjoa Andoh) pressures him into joining the ball at her manor; as we quickly learn, there’s no saying no to her. The good chandeliers are hung, the torches are lit, and the dulcet tones of “Thank U, Next” are playing. Daphne makes a successful entrance — or she would if her brother, Anthony, wasn’t blocking her every step, pushing her onto Lord Berbrooke (Jamie Beamish), the absolute worst.

The next day, Daphne and Marina entertain suitors at their respective manors — Marina’s swimming in prospects, but Anthony continues his campaign of driving away everyone but Berbrooke, whom Daphne finds revolting — even the way he takes teeny-tiny bites out of biscuits skeeves her out. Lady Whistledown takes notice of Daphne’s dried-up pool of suitors — a bad look for her family’s aspirations.

But Marina’s not having as easy a time as it appears. Lady Featherington, a hard-core momager, realizes that Marina is pregnant and threatens to drive her away so she won’t taint her daughters’ reputation by proxy (or continue stealing the spotlight from Philipa and Prudence).

Simon has a reputation as a rake — it’s 1813, they have rakes — and Anthony, his longtime friend, is determined to keep Daphne away from him. Hypocritical of Anthony, really: He’s been carrying on an affair with opera singer Siena (Sabrina Bartlett). He breaks things off with her after Lady Bridgerton shames him for not considering his position, and then promises Daphne to the most respectacle, most repulsive Lord Berbrooke. But Daphne is no pushover. When Daphne leaves a social event early, Lord Berbrooke tries to force himself on her. Simon’s about to intervene, but Daphne knocks Berbrooke out with a single punch. Then and there, Simon and Daphne decide to pretend they’re courting each other, which will serve two purposes: to make Simon seem unavailable and Daphne desirable. It might be crazy enough to work … aside from the pesky little fact that these two have undeniable, explosive chemistry.

Season 1, Episode 2

“Shock and Delight”

Lady Whistledown reports Daphne and Simon’s fake relationship, and Daphne is back to being the “It” girl of the season, her parlor once again teeming with bouquet-bearing bachelors. Anthony even breaks his deal with Berbrooke after Simon tells him about Berbrooke’s attempted assault of Daphne.

Daphne is hardly relieved, knowing Berbrooke’s sense of entitlement. Sure enough, Berbrooke uses his privilege to obtain a special marriage license and threatens to destroy the Bridgertons if Daphne won’t marry him.

Penelope Featherington and Eloise Bridgerton get together to gossip about Daphne and discuss where babies come from, which is knowledge that eludes both of them — sex ed apparently wasn’t a thing for girls in 1813. To satisfy her curiosity, Penelope goes straight to the source, asking Marina where her baby came from. Apparently, this baby came from love — the love of Sir George Crane, currently a soldier in Spain, whom she still dreams of marrying.

Inspired by a tea with Queen Charlotte — who, despite Lady Whistledown’s best efforts, finds this debutante season deathly dull — Lady Bridgerton invites Lady Berbrooke to a tea of her own. But it’s not Lady Berbrooke who’s the real guest of honor — that’d be the Berbrookes’ gossipy servants, who chatter with the Bridgerton staff. Soon enough, word gets to Lady Whistledown that Berbrooke had a son with one of his maids and hasn’t sent any money for him. It’s such a scandal that Berbrooke is driven out of town. Good riddance!

We flash back on Simon’s origin story, and hoo boy, is it bleak — we now get where his commitment issues come from. His mother died after giving birth to him, and his cruel father blamed him for it. Lady Danbury swooped in to raise Simon into a fine specimen of a man. Still, his father — a piece of work if there ever was one — wouldn’t accept him. Feelings are still so hard that Simon vows never to sire an heir: “The Hastings line will die with me.”

Hence Simon’s determination not to fall for Daphne, no matter how many sparks fly.

Season 1, Episode 3

“Art of the Swoon”

The ruse continues. Daphne is turning down every marriage proposal, and Lady Whistledown speculates that it’s because none of them is from Simon. But then, a nephew of Queen Charlotte, Prince Friedrich of Russia (Freddie Stroma), arrives to complicate things. He’s immediately popular with the society ladies, but there’s no spark between him and Daphne; still, Queen Charlotte knows Daphne is the only society woman good enough for her poofy-haired relation.

Meanwhile, in a complete 180, Lady Featherington forces Marina back out of isolation so she can find a suitable husband. Of course, Lady Featherington presents Marina with a series of duds — preggers can’t be choosers. Marina finally receives a letter from George, who says he doesn’t want any part in claiming her child. She and new bestie Penelope are devastated — but, as we learn, Lady Featherington forged the letter, allegedly for Marina’s own good. What mischief!

Lady Bridgerton urges Anthony to look for a match for himself instead of spending all his time meddling in his sisters’ affairs. He obviously still has feelings for Siena, but she refuses to be his “lady in the darkness.” 

Speaking of what goes on in darkness, Simon has — gulp — explained sex to Daphne. (Again, the 1800s desperately needed sex ed!) But, true to his vow to never marry, he calls off their kayfabe courtship — though he thinks he’s doing the kind thing, it shatters Daphne’s heart. He tells Lady Danbury that he’s skipping town. But Daphne has game. She dries her tears and slays all of society with a pearled white gown at the next ball, where Friedrich is most taken with her 19th-century take on the “bend and snap.” The queen approves, and Daphne once again asserts her dominance as the most eligible single lady in London.

Season 1, Episode 4

“An Affair of Honor”

Prince Friedrich presents Daphne with a dazzling necklace, but she still can only think of Simon. Still, she takes Friedrich on an oh-so-romantic date to a boxing match, where she just happens to see Simon. She admits to Lady Bridgerton that the whole Simon courtship was a ruse, but mama can see that Daphne is genuinely heartbroken.

Lady Featherington parades Marina before yet more matches desperate enough to take a pregnant bride, before Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) swoops in to rescue her. Marina is thrilled, but Penelope is crushed — she’s been in love with Colin for a long time. There’s more trouble brewing in the Featherington house: Lord Featherington (Ben Miller) has racked up heavy gambling debts, which means his daughters have no dowries.

At yet another lavish ball, Friedrich is on the verge of proposing, but Daphne excuses herself to run out into the night and tear off the necklace. She runs into Simon, who wants to say one last goodbye. Daphne flees into a hedge maze — naturally — where Anthony witnesses Simon kissing her passionately. Defending his sister’s honor, Anthony demands that Simon marry her. When he refuses, Anthony challenges him to a duel, which Simon reluctantly accepts.

Anthony has an ulterior motive. After the duel, he’ll either be dead or cast out of society — and if he’s cast out of society, he’s free to marry Siena. If there’s a better solution to his romantic problems than shooting his good friend, Anthony hasn’t thought of it yet.

Daphne has a rival for Friedrich’s affections (which she doesn’t welcome, but nevertheless): Cressida Cowper (Jessica Madsen), who also witnessed the kiss in the hedge maze. Just as Anthony is about to shoot, Daphne arrives (on her finest horse) to stop the duel. She tells Simon that if he doesn’t marry her, she’ll be ruined: Someone else also saw him kiss her. Simon explains that he can’t be so cruel as to marry her, because he will not have children. That isn’t enough for Daphne. She simply declares that they’re to be married … and it seems like everyone’s going to go along with it? That’s one way to say it into existence!

Season 1, Episode 5

“The Duke and I”

Daphne wants to lock it down with Simon ASAP, and petitions for a special marriage license for three days hence. Just as Queen Charlotte is congratulating herself on setting up Friedrich with the “diamond” of the season, Lady Whistledown reports Daphne and Simon’s engagement. Friedrich bows out, but Her Majesty won’t let him accept defeat so easily.

Meanwhile, Penelope tries to sabotage Colin’s courtship of Marina, and recruits Lady Featherington to her cause. Lady Featherington first threatens to lock her in her room until she accepts one of her unsuitable suitors (specifically the oldest one), but Marina argues that her marrying Colin will benefit the family by connecting them to the prominent Bridgertons — and she reveals that she’s willing to seduce Colin to secure the proposal. Penelope overhears the plan and appeals to Marina to leave Colin alone, but Marina presses forward, landing the proposal with hilarious ease — all she had to do was lean in to kiss him, and it was all over from there.

The queen refuses to grant the special marriage license, but Lady Danbury is unfazed. She urges the couple to plead before her in person and convince her of the sincerity of their love. Daphne starts out by painting a romanticized picture of their courtship, but Simon tells Queen Charlotte something closer to the truth: It wasn’t love at first sight, but true friendship that brought them together. The queen is moved by this sentiment, especially because her own husband, King George, is losing his memory of their lives together. Simon and Daphne marry quickly in a tiny ceremony, neither of them looking too optimistic about the future.

Mama Bridgerton waits until after the wedding to finally have a 19th-century version of “the talk” with Daphne. So Daphne’s still clueless at the start of her first night as a married woman … which she and Simon spend in separate rooms. Only at first, that is. The two at last admit that they burn for each other, and right by the firelight they shed their many, many layers of clothing, and Daphne discovers that what little she knew about sex was wrong anyway: It can be enjoyable even without the possibility of offspring.

Season 1, Episode 6

“Swish”

Simon and Daphne embark on their honeymoon, where they most definitely won’t be staying in separate rooms. The happy couple are spending so much time getting to know each other in bed … and outdoors in the rain… and on a ladder in the library … and in the study … that Daphne barely has time to ingratiate herself to Simon’s staff or tenants.

But as married life goes on, Daphne intuits that Simon isn’t infertile — he’s purposely avoiding getting her pregnant. Armed with the final piece of her sex education, she takes control in the bedroom, not letting Simon withdraw and calling him out on his lie: It’s not that he “cannot” have children, it’s that he “will not.” Daphne is devastated, and the two fight bitterly.

Without the “It” couple in London, who will Lady Whistledown talk about now? There’s plenty of fodder left. Colin announces that he’s engaged to Marina; Anthony is furious that he’s jumping into marriage so rashly, and Penelope is even more upset. She tries to tell Colin that Marina is in love with George (Sam Haygarth), but that just makes Colin want to marry her even sooner — he knows of a way to be wed within days if they run off to Scotland.

Snooping around, Penelope discovers that the letter to Marina, ostensibly from George denying his love, was forged. Marina isn’t as happy to hear about this as Penelope expects — Marina’s going to Scotland. She sees that Penelope is in love with Colin and is way harsh, telling Penelope that Colin will never take her out of the friend zone. 

Everything hits the fan when Lady Whistledown reports that Marina has been pregnant since before she arrived in the city. Did Penelope tip her off? Is Eloise Lady Whistledown after all?

Season 1, Episode 7

“Oceans Apart”

A chill has formed between Simon and Daphne. Daphne wants to sleep in separate bedrooms, and when she gets notice that Colin is steeped in scandal, Simon accompanies her to London, where they continue to fight about their future. If Daphne is pregnant, he promises to stay in the marriage, but in name only.

Daphne arranges a chaperoned but still tearful meeting between Colin and Marina. Colin tells Marina that even if she’d told him about her pregnancy, he’d still have married her. Eloise keeps sleuthing for clues to the identity of Lady Whistledown, thinking that she may be able to convince the influential pamphleteer to fix the situation with Colin and save the Featheringtons from ruin. But it may be too late — the queen throws Lady Featherington out of a luncheon due to the scandal.

Daphne’s experience with Simon allows her to empathize with Marina’s situation. In a private meeting with Marina, she argues that George should be tracked down and made to take responsibility.

With his family in scandal, Lord Featherington is more desperate than ever to wipe out his debts — so much so that he arranges for the boxer Will Mondrich (Martins Imhangbe) to throw his next match. 

Daphne heads to Lady Danbury’s manor for a soiree for married ladies, where they smoke, drink, play cards, and gossip. (Where can we get an invite?) While raking in the chips at the card table, Daphne meets Kitty (Celine Buckens), the wife of a general, who might be able to help her find George. At a much less fun cocktail hour for men, Anthony and Simon get into a fight over Daphne that’s way more violent than their actual duel. As Daphne dresses Simon’s wound, he finally tells her why he vowed to never have a child, out of spite to his father — an explanation she finds unsatisfying. When she later gets her period while at the opera, confirming she’s not pregnant, she breaks down in tears.

On the flip side of the coin, Marina knows that her pregnancy will destroy her future and drinks a concoction to make herself miscarry. A distraught Penelope discovers her former friend’s limp body.

Season 1, Episode 8

“After the Rain”

Marina recovers, and she’s miscarried — at least, that’s what she believes when Sir Phillip Crane (Chris Fulton), George’s brother, arrives in town. He delivers the news that George died in battle, before finishing a half-written note vowing to marry Marina. George had been in love with her all along.

Sir Phillip offers to marry Marina in George’s place, but Marina refuses, believing that she’s no longer pregnant. The Featheringtons are devastated, as Phillip was their best hope of escaping ruin. There’s one last hope: Lord Featherington’s gambling. How could that go wrong? He places a huge wager on Will’s underdog opponent, immediately piquing his gambling associates’ suspicion. For the moment, Lord Featherington believes his family is saved and the girls’ dowries restored.

Daphne discovers the letters that Simon wrote to his father as a child and begins to see Simon’s refusal to have children in a new light. At the same time, Simon seems to have had a change of heart about having kids after spending the day with the youngest Bridgertons.

At the ball Simon and Daphne are throwing that night, they might not have to pretend to be a happy couple — there’s a glimmer of true love coming back into their marriage. There’s plenty of other drama at the ball, though. Anthony invites Siena as his actual date, but she turns him down — she doesn’t need to be rescued from her life and demands that he let her go. Eloise tips off Lady Whistledown — whoever she is — that the queen’s guards have set a trap for her, allowing her to avoid capture. And during Simon and Daphne’s opening dance, it starts pouring rain. Here’sa metaphor: Everyone’s sins can be washed away! Could there possibly be a happy ending to the society season?

Not entirely. Lord Featherington has been murdered and his money stolen. Colin has left the country, devastating Penelope. Marina agrees to marry Phillip. Anthony declares his intention to marry, but decides he doesn’t believe in finding love — a downer right up to the end. And we finally find out Lady Whistledown’s true identity: She’s Penelope Featherington, who flashes a devilish grin. Well played — but it remains to be seen whether Penelope is chaotic good or chaotic evil.

Fast-forward into the future, with Daphne giving birth to a beautiful baby boy — Simon will have an heir after all. In Bridgerton, all vows are made to be broken.
