As far back as Randy Kangal can remember, two of the most important things in his life have been people and food. When his mother opened a family-run restaurant specializing in Caribbean cuisine in 1997, he learned a lot about traditions and ancient recipes. Having a long history in the restaurant and food service industry, eventually inspired him to embark on his own journey in 2011.

Kevin Godard, Owner, Godard's Your Independent Grocer in Meaford, Ontario, is a passionate advocate for inclusive hiring who believes in creating a workplace where everyone feels valued and empowered. Growing up, Kevin witnessed firsthand the power of accessibility through his father's work launching a Handi-Transit program, a curb-to-curb transportation service for persons with physical disabilities who are unable to use the conventional bus system. This experience, coupled with raising a son on the autism spectrum, ignited a fire in him to champion opportunities for individuals with disabilities.

Truth and Reconciliation 

September 30 is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation – a day we set aside to reflect on the impact that residential schools had on the Indigenous community. This tragic time took children from their homes, tore families apart, and must never be forgotten.

At Shoppers Drug Mart® we are passionate about giving back to our communities. Each fall, stores raise funds for women impacted by domestic violence through the Shoppers Foundation for Women’s Health™ Giving Shelter fundraising campaign. While the campaign is national, each store has a local charity partner who receives all in-store donations.

This June, all 11 of our Ottawa Loblaws stores came together to help raise money for BGC (formerly known as Boys and Girls Club) Day. The stores hosted a day filled with charity BBQs, face painting, raffles and more, in support of BGC Ottawa to make it an unforgettable day of giving back.

When 18-year-old Sarah Tompkins rang in the first customer at the new Zehrs on Bayfield Street in Barrie, ON, she never would’ve expected to be doing it again almost 23 years later when the store re-opened once again as a Zehrs after converting to a Loblaws in 2014.

Meet Ian Metcalfe, Director of Visual Merchandising and Licensed Product at Joe Fresh. Ian is a multi-talented individual who spends his free time drawing, travelling, visiting museums, and enjoying the company of his beloved cat, Bernie. Ian's latest endeavour, The Everybody Bloom Pride Collection, carries a deeper meaning. As an openly queer colleague, Ian was thrilled to create a design that celebrates the joy, beauty, and diversity of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.

If you asked David Morello what he envisioned for the future of his Your Independent Grocer® (YIG) location in Peterborough, Ont. when he became store owner with his wife in 2000, you can bet that it wouldn’t have involved a member of the local community camping out on the store rooftop annually, for 96 hours, for 20 years.

Nearly 21 years ago to this day, marks what would become a life-changing journey both personally and professionally, for David McDonnell-Lye, Health and Wellness Manager of Zehrs® in Welland, Ont. It was a time when he would announce being a member of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community…by accident.
