(An update for anyone interested in my son Charlie’s nonprofit, Pass the Bricks.) This momentum is amazing. The media coverage is definitely exciting: over 60 outlets in 10 countries, including last night’s segment on NBC Nightly News. But as I watch Charlie go on this journey, what strikes me most is the incredible outpouring of support he’s received. He's heard from hundreds of people - of all ages and life circumstances - who believe in his mission and just want to help. There are now “ambassadors” (what he’s calling the individuals, families, companies, schools, churches, etc. doing Pass the Bricks) in over 50 cities across the globe. And together they’re bringing “play” to thousands of kids. I’m so happy for him—yes, to have created something from scratch and to watch it scale, but especially because he gets to see first-hand a unique level of human kindness. For a teenager growing up in our chaotic, disconnected, cynical world, this is beyond meaningful. I know it will stay with him his entire life. BACKGROUND: Malik's Charitable Foundation was established in 2018 by Regina Walker. Regina's passion for community service and her son, Malik, inspired her to address the educational needs of underprivileged students. MCF provides school supplies, book bags and books, benefiting over 100 local students. This support improves attendance, self-esteem, and enthusiasm for learning. OUR MISSION: To empower underprivileged students by providing them with the necessary tools and resources to excel in their education and future goals. HOW WE HAVE ACCOMPLISHED OUR MISSION: In the 2022-2023 academic school year, we were able to attend an event at a local school during their Open House, where we were able to distribute book bags to deserving students. This event was a testament to MCF's commitment to fostering educational equity and nurturing the academic potential of every child. Furthermore, MCF's outstanding work through this event was recognized when the foundation was featured in the January 13, 2023 edition of the South Suburban News Newspaper. WHY OUR MISSION MATTERS: We believe that every child within our community should have equal opportunity and easy access to quality education.
