Future Made in Australia: the Senate inquiry drew out examples of how the prospect of subsidies incentivises lobbying. As the AFR points out, "caravan and chocolate makers are lining up", with arguments about the importance of making things in Australia and calls for support. Government will have a task on its hand making sure that decisions are rigorously based on suitable criteria and indicators, in the face of the inevitable commercial and political interests. https://lnkd.in/gYxCGbfS https://lnkd.in/gr6-65WM

Is it possible to solve the problems?
Muddling through with no reforms for 16 years has taken a toll on Germany—and Europe. Now, the country is once again the economic sick man of the continent https://lnkd.in/e4zT8WFr Illustration: Peter Schrank

The similarity in the rhetoric shows a consistency in policy between the current government and 1970s National and he current PM has been very keen on consistent messaging, so not surprising. Without the safety nets, egalitarian vision/ethos that Muldoon had, and as a developed country with a developing country economy (dependent on primary industry exports and tourism) and a neo-liberal ethos (not present in 1970s), it is hard to see a clear strategy to a better future for NZ.

I keep being amazed by how many in my network of colleagues and friends are unaware of the level of repression and authocratic rule of our formerly democratic governments. The UK Crime And Policing Bill has been written for the former government by BigOil’s funded “Think Thanks” as a direct response to Extinction Rebellion and Just Stop Oil’s increasingly effective acts of Civil Resistance. In a nutshell, it erases the right to protest from the statute of British democratic rights. It also paves the way for the political use of the judiciary system: for instance, it allows a judge to lock away for 5 years activists who engage in acts of non violent civil disobedience (to put this in perspective: this the same sentence that rapists get). In the meanwhile, the government keeps taking money from Big Oil and disregards its legal obligation to protect its citizens from the most catastrophic consequences of the man-made environmental collapse. Similar repressive measures have been unleashed on anti-genocide protesters around the world. The same governments who choose silence in the face of the systematic murder of investigative journalists, in Gaza and in the Amazon’s forests alike. The system is shacking: we are going to take the power back. https://lnkd.in/enZUjFf3

🚨 12 months of obstruction: The Piantedosi decree's lethal legacy. With last year being the deadliest in the Mediterranean since 2017, Italy's anti-rescue law endangers thousands at sea. Stop hindering civil search and rescue - protect the fundamental rights of people on the move! In light of the increasing death toll in the Central Mediterranean since early 2023, coinciding with the adoption of a new law by Italian authorities and the systematic assignment of distant ports to humanitarian rescue ships, we call on the Italian government to bring an immediate halt to the obstruction of our lifesaving activities at sea. 📢 Here is a joint statement from non-governmental organizations (NGOs) involved in search and rescue activities in the central Mediterranean: 🛟 https://lnkd.in/e_pmSec7
