"Diesel has undergone the most dramatic decline, plummeting from a 38% share in 2016-19 to a mere 13% in 2020-23. By 2023, diesel vehicles, including mild-hybrid variants, comprised only 8% of new registrations. We anticipate this share to dwindle to a mere 3% by 2028, resulting in an additional loss of 488,000 vehicles over four years, on top of the 2.9 million lost since 2020." To our government and ENGO colleagues this announcement serves as a reminder that we are in a brave new world where nobody really knows what the future holds and that ultimately… as we have always said… the transition to zero emission transportation that all are investing and working towards comes down to the key variable that the automotive industry has always attempted to understand … the CONSUMER. #autoindustry #transition

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) Economic Team’s excellent presentation on vehicle registrations and outlook on 7th May, plus useful commentary by New AutoMotive, Will Reeves and others, kick-started much debate about the merits of electrification, with polarised views once again on display and alternative energy lobbies occupying positions somewhere between the two. In reality, the truth lies with ‘all of the above’ as opposed to ‘none of the above’. At Flexible Power Systems we are of the view that fleets may or may not have a business case for electrification right now, but that the answer is not a vanilla yes/ no. As part of their ongoing fleet replacement planning, they should be conducting some work to establish whether they do or do not, and for which elements of their fleet and in which locations serving specific duty cycles. And that may well not mean one-for-one or like-for-like. Those fleets willing to be bound by standards for safer, smarter, and greener road transport operations through accreditation under FORS - Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme are obliged to conduct such an exercise and undoubtedly benefit from this. Where the business case does exist (potentially employing different or better operational choices that in the past), then positive financial, reputational and operational benefits can be realised. Where it does not, it is instructive to know when - or under what circumstances or at what price point - it might. Traditional April volatility belies the fact that BEV volumes are still expected to rise by 44.1% in 2024 to 29,000 units, albeit lower than previously predicted. Consequently the 2024 outlook BEV market share has been revised down to 8.3%, from 9.4% and market trends suggest that achievement of the 10% mandate will be challenging, even with VETS. Some OEMs have been called out this week for their slow progress and have responded with signals that they might constrain ICE production. Strategically and financially, this would be a bold move, with plenty of new players eager to win market share. Monthly, or even quarterly data is instructive rather than indicative, and the longer-term trend is much more illustrative of the direction of travel. The graph shows a positive though softened trajectory. Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom measures would help. So, our message to #fleetoperators is this: as part of your ongoing fleet replacement planning, please do conduct some work to establish whether you do or do not have a business case for electrification (or indeed any other technology) for all or any elements of your fleet, and across locations serving varying duty cycles. In this way you can understand the capital, space, energy systems and operational implications of transition for your fleet. #EVFleet #netzero #fleetelectrification #commercialfleet #vans #ElectricTrucks #ReducingCarbon #ReducingCosts #Sustainability #ProjectJOLT #FlexiblePowerSystems #evdata #efficiency

"Under a revised plan, the EPA is expected to adopt a less-aggressive pace of emissions reductions followed by more stringent cuts after the 2029 model year, according to reports." Retail auto dealers along with National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) have thoughtfully engaged the current administration to bring environmental policies and goals more in line with where customers are at. Staying involved in the discussion with leaders nationally and locally is critical. #electricvehicle #dealerships #automotive #nada #epa #demand https://lnkd.in/gHSM5EsW

The vast global overproduction of electric cars at a time of stalling consumer demand is likely to result in millions of zero-emission vehicles being left unsold over the next two years and hasten price wars, according to private industry research. This is likely to benefit consumers but could send parts of the industry into crisis, experts say. Regulators and legislators, meanwhile, are likely to come under renewed pressure to rein back their ambitions to reduce carbon emissions, which has fuelled the electric car production boom
