Question for recruiters. What do you look for in that opening message to decide if you will connect with the potential applicant? For anyone who isn't a recruiter, what opening messages have treated you well with getting that first connection?

I broke my own rule, and I regret it! Never ever do this! Rule: Never do un-scheduled calls from recruiters. Here’s what happened: Sunday @ 8AM, I get a call from a recruiter. So I said: let’s schedule this for later. They insisted: it’s going to take ‘just 5 mins.’ I said: let’s do this later. They suggest: a call later that day. I said: later. They explain: it will take just 5 minutes. It’s already 4 minutes now. I said: Let’s go. I keep it brief. While I’m on the call, my toddler woke up, took off their pants, and diaper, and started peeing on the floor. My other kid started screaming. I tell the recruiter what’s happening, they laugh, and continue. I am in shock at the response of this recruiter. They still want to continue. I listen to what they have to say, get the next steps, and hang up. That’s why I always recommend scheduled phone screening. Interesting article with insights into the reality of the recruitment process from all sides and useful recommendations for successful employment applications. For example: “Remember that every time you interact with a recruiter, they are assessing you. Don’t save your best behaviour for interviews only. Be professional and mindful with all your calls and emails.” This article also highlights important questions about the references we intend to use: “When did you last speak with your referees? Do they have an up to date copy of your resume? Do they really know what you are capable of? Are they still happy to provide a reference for you?”

Failing to respond, whether it's an internal recruiter, an external recruiter or a prospective employer, is simply impolite. It's entirely acceptable, and even recommended, to follow up with a polite call if you haven't received a response within a reasonable timeframe. Missed a scheduled call with a recruiter? Here's the next steps: 🟢 Immediately send an email expressing sincere apologies, explaining the situation, and proposing alternative availability. This approach resolves the issue in 90% of cases. Avoid repeatedly calling, especially within a short timeframe after the missed call, as we might be engaged in another conversation. #Recruitment #CandidateExperience
