For One Producer, it’s Diamond Life in the Permian Midland and Delaware As they say, when one door closes another door opens. But in the case of Midland, Texas-based Diamondback Energy this week, that old expression with one negative translates to a big positive all the way around. Reese Energy Consulting today is following the latest news from Diamondback, which has closed the door on its February $26 billion merger deal with Midland neighbor Endeavor Resources. Among the biggest acquisitions we’ve seen as part of the consolidation frenzy now a year long, the Diamondback-Endeavor merger has to rank as one of the most memorable. As two of the Permian’s largest operators, each was considered prime buy targets early on for producers on the hunt for more acreage and drilling inventory. This to which both E&Ps rebuffed any rumor, any notion, any idea they were up for sale. Then came Diamondback’s Endeavor announcement last February, no doubt leaving a few broken hearts. With fed scrutiny officially in the rearview, the combination gives Diamondback a total 838,000 net acres across the Midland and Delaware and 816 MBOED. Now onto the open door, where Diamondback’s subsidiary Viper Energy Inc. continues to build its Permian mineral and royalty interests in both plays with three new acquisitions from Fort Worth and Midland, Texas-based Tumbleweed Royalty IV in a cash and stock deal valued at $1.1 billion. Assets include 3,237 acres in the Midland and 490 acres in the Delaware core, which currently produce 2.5 MBPD (4 MBOED). According to news sources, Viper expects Diamondback to develop 120-140 new well locations by the end of 2026. What do you think? ONEOK is buying a set of NGL pipelines for $280 million. The announcement says a lot about contemporary oil & gas strategy. Let’s start with the corporate speak: ====== "This strategic acquisition provides the quickest pipeline connectivity to and within the critical supply and demand centers for our NGLs, refined products and crude oil assets in the Gulf Coast," said Pierce H. Norton II, ONEOK president and chief executive officer. ====== The word “quickest” is incredibly important here. As I’ve remarked before, today’s oil & gas industry is all about time to value. Investors have no patience for future windfalls. The future is way too uncertain. They want to see value today, and often that value is from increased cash flows, a fraction of which go directly to shareholders. You can compare this path – buying existing assets – with the alternative of building your own new pipeline system. Building new systems can be expensive, slow (because of permitting and just general construction limitations), and risky. It’s much easier to buy something in place and integrate it in short order. That’s what ONEOK is committing to do. Another critically important part of the above quote is the mention of the Gulf Coast. Again, with uncertainty at unprecedented levels across the oil & gas landscape, investors prefer a geographical concentration in the most resilient areas of supply and demand. The Gulf Coast certainly qualifies. The Gulf Coast has existing infrastructure, access to land- and water-based distribution networks, and operational efficiencies that will allow it to remain competitive far longer than other, less favorable marketplaces. What then did we learn about contemporary oil & gas strategy from this ONEOK announcement? ➊ Moderate, tangible value today is worth much more than potentially larger, more speculative value in the future. ➋ The Gulf Coast should be one of the last regions to become stranded as decarbonization momentum builds. Just like Soylent Green, Hurricane Beryl took a lot out of the Oil and Gas industry last week… For those outside of that Gen X reference, Soylent Green…it’s people. I believe that the teeming millions know what I am getting at here.  We saw an unprecedented Power issue in Houston last week post Beryl.  Over 2.5mm people were without power until Wednesday.  After half were back on the grid, most people (including myself) were sweating it out until Sunday (RIP Richard Simmons). For all of the pundits outside of Houston that are writing about how oil prices fell as the infrastructure was left untouched by the hurricane, let’s not forget that the people that were affected by the power loss work in the Energy industry.  The ones that keep everything up (RIP Dr. Ruth) No power meant that these employees couldn't work from home.  Many may not have wanted to leave families stranded at home if they had an opportunity to get back into an air conditioned office.  Life takes priority in these things and many outside of Houston could not have understood the impact. In Texas there are over 400K people in the Oil and Gas industry.  Half of those are in the Houston area.  From the workers to the traders to the staff in between.  Markets are global, but we don’t move barrels and BTUs with AI or magic (RIP Shannen Doherty) This week most of Houston is back with the lights, internet and clean laundry.  Hedging and trading operations will be back in full force, but it’s going to be a slow start.  We’re going to get back to watching the markets and figuring out where it should be.  I’ll say this much, demand for everything Energy is not going away.  We have the supply and we’ll be demand driven from here on out.  We’ve seen an increase of nearly 2% in population growth in Houston since 2020.  That means in simple terms, there’s 6.8mm people in our metro area that are using oil, gas and electricity. It’s been a heck of a week my friends.  Let’s make Oil and Gas trading great again.  Call me with all of your needs for a better FCM.  #futures #oil #demand

I want to try to briefly elaborate on what this program meant for me. This year was exceptionally difficult for me. We lost my mother-in-law on April 8th. Losing her was the greatest, most difficult, and traumatic loss I have faced. It humbled and challenged me in various ways, especially professionally. I was abundantly blessed with the leadership, support, compassion and guidance of Ruth Staat, Roger Engelbart, my mentor John Turner, Neal Couture, FASAE, CAE, Ricky Morgan, Richard W., Rusty W. my fellow classmates that became great friends, and the focus of the curriculum. All of it playing an instrumental role in helping me through this unfortunate time. Anyone can be a leader. John Maxwell wrote, "Leadership is influence, nothing more and nothing less." Simply, it is the ability to gain followers. We evaluate leaders by analyzing their followers, character, results, successes, as well as other aspects. The best leaders are the ones who do not hold their followers back in fear of replacement. They lead and guide with a mission and purpose to empower their followers to become even greater than themselves. Thanks to the RISE program for affording me the opportunity to be led by some of the best and for teaching me how to be a better leader. Newly released data from the Texas Workforce Commission indicates upstream oil and gas employment fell again in June, with a decline of 2,000 jobs compared to May. That’s what industry body the Texas Oil & Gas Association (TXOGA) said in a statement sent to Rigzone, noting that “this marks five out of six months this calendar year that the job count has dropped”. “Operational efficiencies are driving strong production with fewer rigs, which can translate to declining industry job numbers,” TXOGA President Todd Staples said in the statement. _______________________________
