Appreciate seeing that App Store review time has roughly halved since the summer (down to about 4hrs compared to 9hrs). I can't help but wonder why starting a review for Testflight external beta is still at the 8hr mark (though I certainly understand that those should be lower priority compared to production builds). I +1'd the Google Play IN_REVIEW status issue and recommend others do the same! On the green goblin [Android] side of things, I've personally experienced a lot of variance lately, resulting in some unexpectedly [days long] reviews. I also see that Google recommends waiting for production reviews while alpha reviews are in-progress, citing longer review times. My experience has been the opposite, where the synchronous reviews results in a MUCH longer review cycle. The numbers point to improvement, but there's still further progress to be made, both for timing and consistency of policy enforcement.

Geoffrey Hinton's contributions is significant enough that I won't quibble with the category for his prize. (Nobel committee could create a special category just for him for all I care.) Widely (and rightfully) recognized as a leading expert in deep learning, his research touches everything from * Foundational concepts such as backprop https://lnkd.in/gMunbBzA * Foundational model architectures such as AlexNet https://lnkd.in/gq2JPJ6h * Optimization algorithms such as Momentum and RMSProp * Visualization techniques such as t-SNE https://lnkd.in/gjuw3vhA I don't think it's possible to overstate how profound the impact of machine learning and artificial intelligence will have on society, promising to unlock discoveries, improving productivity. Even ideas about what mastery of language or reasoning means, will need to be re-thought. Professor Hinton deserves all the credit for all of this.

I'm so proud of the work that went into the OpenVMM and OpenHCL. My team has focused on storage devices, and there is a ton of great code in this repo contributed by the engineers working on this (me: I'm a manager, so of sometimes dubious value :)). It's very exciting to see this code become open source! Not only is this a checkpoint in all the hard work that goes into writing a new VMM (and in my team's case: storage emulation code), it also marks a new way of working for some of us. While many engineers in Microsoft from different orgs have contributed already, we're going to keep developing this in the open. As the blog post below mentions, reach out on GitHub or Zulip. Or, you can contribute to the code itself (anyone else love debugging IDE emulators?). While we're already using this code in Azure (over 1.5 million VMs last month, according to the blog), there's still plenty of interesting and exciting stuff to go do.

Exciting Adventures and Tech Discoveries with Waymo Every summer, I visit my sister in California, and we typically explore the beaches, trails, valleys, mountains, and other scenic spots. This time, we decided to dive deeper into the heart of San Francisco, where we stumbled upon a Waymo driverless car. Without missing a beat, we decided to experience it firsthand. Flashback to a few years ago, during the COVID-19 pandemic, when I was preparing for a Machine Learning certificate course and immersing myself in every video by the renowned AI/ML guru Andrew Ng. One of his YouTube videos segued into autonomous cars and the feedback loops used to train and improve these models. That was the moment I became a believer in this technology and its potential to drive new innovations. From the early days of large computers mounted on vans to the millions of Teslas on the road today, the progress has been astounding. Experiencing Waymo's driverless car was a revelation. It's not just a tech marvel; it's a user-centric innovation. From the seamless booking process to the constant updates inside the car, and the personalized touch of displaying my initials "SC" when the car arrived, every detail was meticulously crafted to enhance passenger comfort. The price point was comparable to Uber, which was another pleasant surprise. Ultimately, the success of any product hinges on User Experience, Cost, and Accessibility. Waymo has built a competitive product that I believe will see massive adoption, potentially paving the way for more competitors in this space. My 10-year-old son asked, "When is it coming to West Chester?" That question sums it up perfectly. Technology is a never-ending journey of skill acquisition, akin to surfing. In surfing, you prepare for the next wave and make adjustments while riding it to stay balanced. Similarly, every 10-20 years, there's a significant shift in technology, and you must continually upskill to catch these waves and stay ahead. Keeping up with skill trends is essential for maintaining employment, as the learning process never truly ends. Specializations can be costly and often become obsolete very fast. Over time, new tools simplify and streamline previously complex and error-prone workflows. My strategy involves cultivating a broad skill set and maintaining a passion for learning that surpasses anyone I know. I dedicate every waking hour after work to learning something new.

Is ChatGPT copying Claude's Artifacts features? 😉 ChatGPT now has a new Canvas capability that makes brainstorming and developing ideas easier and more engaging. Canvas provides a more visual, interactive way to work on ideas, whether it's brainstorming sessions, collaborative coding, or sketching out plans that need extra space to grow. This is the first major UI upgrade for ChatGPT since its launch, marking a significant milestone. Unlike Claude's artifacts, Canvas offers an integrated environment that combines brainstorming, real-time collaboration, and code sharing—all in one place. I especially liked the new code review and language porting options. BTW - I couldn't miss the fact that Cursor (which was all the rage this past month) is also threatened by this development.
