The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has several assessment of the current K-12 instructional material--particularly powered by tech, market, which I cannot agree with them more. To highlight two that resonate with me the most: 1. We do not have sufficient evidence on what product features -- particularly powered by AI-- and enactment practices work to foster student motivation, engagement, and persistence (MEP), particularly for Black, Latino, and all students experiencing poverty. 2. The current market does not adequately highlight what works when it comes to effectively motivating and engaging students, and does not reward products that shows evidence of increased student learning. This failure means product developers have little guidance on and motivation to build and sustain products that foster student MEP while leaving buyers unaware of how to pick higher quality instructional materials and tech products. Very good interview of Alex 'Sandy' Pentland who's joining Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI)'s Digital Economy Lab; these 5 arguments especially resonated with me: 1) "We also need to reduce partisan animosity online. Currently, digital media are designed to get us to react quickly, which results in unthinking responses that in turn lead to cascades of behavior where everyone becomes outraged. We need a system that instead encourages people to communicate in ways that support democratic processes rather than tearing them apart. Large-scale experiments find that online discussions are improved when people are encouraged to reflect a little bit on what they are about to say. For example, we see less division and outrage online when we add an extra step that allows time for reflection before replying or forwarding, or add a prompt to consider what a comment will do to your reputation." 2) "we need to draw a line between individual expression and mass expression. For example, consider the case where influencers often have more than a million “friends” on social media. Anyone with that many people following them can make money and build a reputation while saying whatever they want. And I think these overly powerful voices ought to be treated like businesses and not like individuals. They shouldn’t be able to cry “fire” in a crowded theater or tell outright lies. Those are basic standards we demand of other businesses [like] TV news shows or newspapers can’t publish something just to generate outrage. (...) If you’re going to express your ideas to a million people, then you’re a business and you ought to be regulated like a business." 3) "In some cases, fixing the problem will require changing often subtle little things down in the guts of the internet. As an example, if someone is producing 50,000 tweets a day, that’s a bot, not a human. That’s an obvious case, but there are other things we can do to find bots more efficiently, determine when foreign nations are interfering in elections, and better deal with ransomware and cyberattacks. The problems we have now evolved because the architecture of the internet was never completed. And now maybe the time has finally come to finish the job." 4) "it’s not artificial general intelligence, or AGI, that worries me. It’s that AI is becoming pervasive in so many parts of our lives, including our medical system, our transportation system, and our schooling system. It’s going to be everywhere, just like the previous waves of AI were. And we need to make sure that it’s prosocial." 5) "AI has always been and continues to be a way of finding and using patterns in data. So, if you want to control AI, you have to control the data it feeds on by demanding privacy rights and ownership rights over data. Without that, AI will just run amok. Data are like the food for AI, and if you want to control AI, you have to control the data."

Interesting data and perspectives in Cornell's report on test-optional admission, influencing their decision to revert to a test-required policy. I'm curious how deep this return to required standardized test scores will proliferate over the next few admission cycles. While this shift may impact only a handful of the nation's most selective institutions presently, most admission teams are actively working through at least some updates to next year's requirements. A huge shout-out to those colleagues diligently updating CRM checklists, email templates, and web content – your efforts are important and appreciated! But don't forget the importance of updating those external college search platform profiles, too (even if you're not paying for their services!). Prospective students and their families heavily rely on this information, especially so right now for juniors ramping up their college search. Discrepancies between these platforms and your University's website and marketing material can lead to unnecessary confusion. Overwhelmed trying to remember what needs review or updates? Delegate the task of inventorying and tracking these profiles to some super-sleuthing student workers. A very useful study on GenAI policies and policy making in US schools. It talks about what good policy making can be: "Taken together policies, procedures and practices form a micropolitical ecosystem (Fox & Allred, C2017). For example, alongside a policy that promises to protect student data, there should also be a procedure where information about student data protection can be requested, reviewed and evaluated as part of the decision of whether to purchase or adopt an application or program. When schools adopt only materials that protect student data, what teachers can use to teach shifts and thus, policy informs pedagogy. In sharing these decisions with children and families, data privacy policy can also become a topic of instruction where more people become informed and can participate." It also talks about what the stakes are and who should engage and why: "Districts need guidance and time to engage with others in the micropolitical ecology of policy making (Fox & Allred, 2017). To make quick decisions is to risk feeding cultural war panic and fear across the political spectrum (Kaka et al., 2024; Schwartz, 2023). To take a very long time to generate policies risks leaving space for private sector actors to overtake educational purposes to insert its genAI products (Knox, 2020; Williamson, 2024). There is also the risk of the public impression that schools are not working fast enough when there are no local policies (Lieberman, 2023; Pier, 2023). It seems that there is a need to pursue meaningful collaboration in making genAI policies that give more groups, especially children and teachers, more agency in making and implementing policies, procedures and practices (Rice et al., 2024)." Congratulations Mary Rice on the publication of this important study.
