Last month, I jettisoned 85 meetings (nearly 4 per day) from my calendar by using Loom. Here are the top 5 ways Loom has improved how I work and made my workdays more enjoyable: 1) Skip meeting FOMO with replay: As an East Coast member of a mostly West Coast team, there are many meetings that happen after 5 p.m. - many of which I WANT to attend. With Loom, I can watch the replay the next morning at 1.5 speed and engage with my colleagues by dropping in emojis and comments at specific parts of the meeting. That last part is what makes Loom special because I am not JUST watching the replay - I can participate and "show up" async. 2) Share feedback in a more thoughtful and personal way: Sometimes leaving a comment on a page or presentation can feel cold or insufficient. I prefer to record a Loom as a comment so the person receiving the feedback hears my tone while digesting the note. It's also helpful to be able to share my screen to show examples of what I mean or am referring to in my comment. 3) Document a new process: Instead of calling a meeting where everyone is a forced passive listener learning a new process, I like to send a Loom so they can watch it at 1.5 speed and drop in questions I can answer later. I think chances of engagement and understanding greatly improve if someone can consume content at the time they choose vs. attending a meeting at a time when they may be distracted with other work. 4) Avoid those "can I grab 5 minutes to ask you how to do something?" meetings: These pop-up meetings can be disruptive when I am in the flow, so I ask colleagues to send me the question and I commit to a time when I will send them back a Loom with my recommendation/tutorial. Being able to share my screen and talk through my thought process helps with knowledge transfer. Bonus points for when I can use the same Loom to answer the same question coming from a different colleague! 5) Make live meetings more productive: During our most recent planning cycle, I recorded Looms that gave an overview of my proposed PR plans and sent them to stakeholders a week before a scheduled live meeting. By consuming the presentation content ahead of time, we were able to focus our discussion on gaps, blockers, and additional opportunities. It took the meeting from passive listening to an active exchange of ideas. Any other Loom diehards out there? How are you using it?

Today, Atlassian welcomes Rewatch to the #TEAM! With Rewatch’s technology, we’re bringing AI-powered meeting recording to Loom. Once this integration is complete, users will be able to connect Loom to their calendars, delegate note-taking to a virtual meeting assistant, automate the sharing of meeting notes & action items, and search this content across the Atlassian platform. Meetings are currently the bane of a lot of individuals work experience. The Atlantic called it the “meeting-industrial complex” last month. However, that is diminishing how much value and knowledge is exchanged in meetings. Meetings, when done well, are all about collective creativity which are genuinely productive and enjoyable. Loom, with Rewatch’s tech, will take another step to helping people get to this better way of work. A ton of work to do here. Connor Sears, Scott Goldman, and Rewatch team - let’s get it! See Atlassian post below for the full details.

People don't hate meetings—they hate poorly run meetings. 👀 Our research shows that participants consider over two-thirds (72%) of meetings ineffective, and more than half (52%) of workers said they leave meetings needing a clearer understanding of the next steps or who is responsible for follow-up tasks. 😵💫 Capturing detailed notes and outlining post-meeting action items, including assigning owners and deadlines, are best practices for facilitating a meeting. But, taking notes during the meeting is distracting, and sharing them later takes time and effort. We are excited to bring Rewatch's technology to the #TEAM to address these challenges. This platform, powered by AI, is designed to enhance virtual meetings. Once integrated with Loom, Atlassian's async video communication tool, customers will gain access to an AI-powered meeting assistant. The assistant will take notes, find action items, and send follow-ups after meetings. These details will be easily accessible on the Atlassian platform so everyone stays updated. I just finished a 3-month project involving 20 people across 3 countries and 4 time zones without a single meeting. Here's how it went: I have wanted to experiment with a meetingless project for a while, but in this case, it was not possible for us all to meet within our working hours. Sharing context at the beginning of a project is critical to its success. Knowing there was no way we could get together in real-time, I recorded a Loom. I talked through: - Why this project was important - What we hoped to achieve - How each person could contribute I started a new Slack channel and added everyone. I shared the loom and an associated Confluence page. Then I waited... nervously. Would anyone watch the loom? What if they had questions? Within 24 hours most people had watched the loom. Live/in-person kick-off meeting avoided ✅ In some cases I had the wrong person, so the relevant person was tagged in. They watched the loom and were instantly up to speed. I didn't have to repeat myself once - more meetings avoided ✅ People had questions - these were asked in Slack and were answered asynchronously whenever the appropriate person came online. Unprompted, each person shared an update ~ weekly. Some people shared more frequently. I don't recall ever needing to ask for an update. Status meetings - not required, a whole series of meetings avoided ✅ Every team took ownership and did what they needed to do. When something needed an explanation, we recorded a loom and shared it with everyone in the channel. How did the project go? We achieved our goals within the required timeframe, all without a single meeting. The engineers on the team were happy 😊, but so were the marketing team. This isn't always going to be possible. I'm not a meeting hater, a good meeting can be extremely valuable to move things along. Sometimes it's better to discuss things in real-time. It's not like we needed the evidence, but this further proves meetings are an overused tool. If the default became asynchronous collaboration, maybe we could save real-time collaboration for super high-value situations... #DevEx #DevOps
