Our executive director, Clementine Jacoby, went from performing in a circus to founding a tech nonprofit transforming criminal justice and public safety through data. “Everyone deserves to feel safe. The problem is that there’s a lot of disagreement around what we mean when we say safety. The more productive conversation is one focused on how we’d spend our money if we started from scratch. What is the system we would design?” Listen to the full discussion with Freakonomics host Steve Levitt:

With AlleyCorp and ENG(INE)’s help we are exploring new tools that will change how people move through the criminal justice system, improving outcomes for them and their communities.
As part of our civic commitment, AlleyCorp created the Nonprofit ENG(INE) to offer $1M in tech engineering support to four deserving nonprofits that are solving key issues across the country. Today, we couldn’t be more excited to announce our 4 awardees: Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Recidiviz, Upsolve, and Mobile Pathways. We believe the best social innovators should have access to the best technology. By launching ENG(INE), and pairing nonprofits with our team of engineers over 6 months, we hope to help organizations leverage new tech to further their mission and scale their impact. You can read more about each project and the tech stacks we'll be designing and developing in the comment below.

At Recidiviz’s recent Data-Driven Corrections Awards, we recognized Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC) for its commitment to fostering a rehabilitative culture among its staff through the innovative use of data-driven supervision tools. MDOC took home the Most Rehabilitative Staff award for their success in promoting the adoption and effective use of technology to create a more rehabilitative approach to supervision. Their proactive efforts in promoting staff engagement and data-driven decision-making serve as a model for other states. "We're incredibly proud of our staff for their dedication to utilizing data to support positive change," said MDOC Director Heidi Washington. We applaud MDOC's commitment to empowering their officers and fostering a culture of rehabilitation!

We were honored to be featured as a Champion of Change during the Paris Olympics! Improving outcomes for people in the criminal justice system is our game - and it's a key part of ensuring economic mobility for so many American families. Since this video was filmed, we've soared past 100,000 people impacted by our tools - and we're just getting started.
Everyone deserves the opportunity to control their own resources and achieve financial independence. Yet, this ability is out of reach for many, and all too often, people are denied the tools needed to turn their dreams into future realities. Empowering individuals with a pathway toward upward economic mobility — no matter their background — is the sole focus of many DRK Entrepreneurs and their organizations. Much like Olympians, these Champions of Change exhibit exceptional resilience and commitment in their pursuit of a fairer, more inclusive world, and are creating a legacy of impact and empowerment. To date, DRK’s portfolio organizations have uplifted 3.4 million people through skills training, resulting in $2.6 billion of increased assets. Watch DRK’s second #ChampionsofChange installment, first aired as a feature on NBC News’ Olympic coverage, to see the life-changing economic empowerment catalyzed by DRK portfolio organizations. Listen to our CEO, Clementine Jacoby, talk about how to listen to your users without breaking your business on the Startup Podcast. "Enterprise customers are more important than you are — they just are. You won't want to say no to very many of them — in our case, because we want to solve this problem in all 50 states... So you want to have a distinction between: is this a total one-off that has nothing to do with our roadmap, or is this actually a signal from the market? Is this a signal we want to pay attention to, and iterate in that direction? That's customer-driven innovation, which *has* to be a core part of building for the future if you're an enterprise company. You're not sitting there making up all the features; it's being defined by the way your tools are being used and what people want next." She and 🤖 Yaniv Bernstein tackle a classic arsenal of startup topics, like how to: 🎯 Deeply understand your users 🛡 Only build software that scales ⚖ Balance innovation and focus ❤️ Preserve core values and empower your team https://lnkd.in/d5MZfc-r

We just had our last board meeting with outgoing board chair Nicco Mele, and we could think of no better way to honor him than to get his face painted on Recidiviz-themed Oreos! We’re a little offended that he didn’t know they were from us, but we’ll forgive him that in exchange for everything he’s done for this team and mission over the last four years. Thank you Nicco, and thank you Draper Richards Kaplan Foundation for taking a bet on using technology to transform outcomes for people caught in the criminal justice system.
Nicco Mele on Instagram: "Who sent me these custom Oreos with my photo? They were a gift — but I don’t know from whom! Let me know so I can appropriately thank you and share the astonishment of my children. I managed to briefly convince one of my kids that I had hand-painted them myself… @oreo amazing!!!"

The criminal justice system can only operate safely and fairly if everyone has insight into which policies and practices are effective. For policymakers and criminal justice practitioners, data makes it possible to compare their performance to that of their peers and act confidently in moments of crisis. For advocates and communities, data clarifies injustices and disparities, making it easier to advance better policies. For researchers, data powers models that predict how the system could change under different circumstances, driving decisions about what practices to implement. Making more data public makes more change possible. Delve into our public data projects: https://lnkd.in/eQ6rf3dr
