WHAT HAPPENED TO ROCKLEY PHOTONICS? You may remember we did several interviews last year with Silicon Photonics pioneer Rockley Photonics. They were best known for their work on noninvasive biomarker technology. Well, now there is an update. On October 23, 2024, Optica Corporate Member Celestial AI announced its acquisition of silicon photonics intellectual property (IP) from Rockley Photonics. The acquisition includes a portfolio of issued and pending patents in optoelectronic systems-in-package, electro-absorption modulators, and optical switch technology—key areas for advancing data center infrastructure in AI applications. The IP from Rockley aligns with its core technology roadmap, bolstering the commercialization strategy of its Photonic Fabric platform. According to Celestial AI, the Photonic Fabric delivers more than 25 times greater bandwidth and memory capacity than existing optical interconnect alternatives and copper, while reducing latency and power consumption by up to 10 times. In recent developments, Celestial AI secured $175 million in Series C funding and announced collaborations with data center hyperscalers and semiconductor companies on Photonic Fabric chiplets. This acquisition strengthens its IP foundation as it continues to push forward in the rapidly evolving data infrastructure space.
