About us
Opened in 1964, the Indianapolis Zoo is the largest privately funded zoo in the nation. Located near downtown in White River State Park since 1988, the 93-acre Zoo was the first to be triple accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and the American Alliance of Museums as a zoo, an aquarium and a botanic garden. Hosting more than a million visitors annually, the Zoo has also emerged as a global leader in animal conservation and research, receiving international recognition for work with conservation and breeding programs including the world’s first successful artificial insemination of an African elephant. Funding from the Indianapolis Zoo also supports the efforts of animal conservation organizations around the globe. At the Zoo, guests can connect year-round with nearly 1,300 animals within living habitats that closely resemble their native regions of the globe. The beautiful 3.3-acre White River Gardens is also part of the Zoo and continues its tradition of connecting animals, plants and people.

Congratulations Fundación de Conservación Jocotoco for winning the Saving Species Challenge! #SavingSpecies #Conservation
BREAKING NEWS! Fundación de Conservación Jocotoco has won the Indianapolis Zoo Saving Species Challenge. With the $1 million grant, Jocotoco will improve the conservation status of the blue-throated hill star hummingbird in Ecuador. Blue-throated hillstars are listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Jocotoco will have five years to enact its plan to downlist the hummingbird species to Endangered. Blue-throated hillstars were first described in 2018, and approximately 100 mature individuals remain among minuscule stretches of páramo grasslands where they feed on the "flower of the Andes." The main threats facing this hummingbird are habitat loss and degradation caused by pine plantations, ranching and mining. Jocotoco's conservation action plan includes the following steps: expand protected habitat through land acquisition; establish conservation agreements with local communities; improve the availability of suitable nesting sites; restore habitat using the species’ main foraging plants, foster community engagement and promote economic alternatives' overturn mining concessions by invoking the rights of nature; and implement an ongoing monitoring program. Congratulations to Fundación de Conservación Jocotoco for winning the Indianapolis Zoo Saving Species Challenge.
