It's bad. Very "hack." Feels like a high school project. Insulting to horror fans from the very start. And the following few minutes seemed to promise to get better, only it continued to disappoint. For example, when the film was about 6 minutes and 40 seconds in, it cuts to an outside view of a theater advertising a show for "Dante The Great" with a dramatic instrumental flair, and the "sold out" text looked SO CHEAP, it felt like an insult.
I am a HUGE fan of the V/H/S series. This one is by far the worst to date (up to March 2025). Sure, it has some good moments, but I could spend my entire review just ripping apart the first 10 minutes.
The story is so random and incohesive. Full of cheap special effects, I mean, just watch the scene where he's practicing using his new cloak to conjure a "moving thing" on the floor, followed by the worst effect ever to pull a rabbit out of his cloak. Yikes.
I'm only a few minutes in and it's so cringe I dunno if I'm going to be able to last. They're acting like this character's performance is 20x better than Chris Angel's. At least Chris Angel was entertaining and a successful illusionist, who didn't have to fall back to his dungeon-like basement even after apparent "mass success."
It then continues to rip off other massively successful horror films like Paranormal Activity.
Sorry, but this one is such a dud, it's a joke.

First of all, if you watched the entire first episode and you're not hooked after that GENIUSLY executed series premiere, something might be seriously wrong with you. Or you're on the spectrum at one of the levels where you have little to no empathy for other human. Which is neither a fault nor a blessing, the point I'm attempting to drive home with you is that this show is so freaking smart, unique and willing to go the distance to shock modern audiences, that all the hype you may have heard about it, is severely warranted.
Secondly, this show is one of those views that brings the hits at the start, and keeps on bringin' them. I'm right now towards the end of one episode of season 2 (I won't tell which, to drive my point home as well as possible whilst avoiding spoilers) and my jaw hasn't dropped this far low since season 1 episode 1.
And this show isn't even all about the shocking moments. The characters, plot development, even the animation is just so gosh darn praise-worthy. Anybody who grew up on 90's animated shows should be really stoked about this one.
It's just so good. There's so much I wanna say about this show here, but I don't wanna spoil anything. If you haven't yet seen it, and are right now reading reviews on IMDB to gauge if you are willing or not to put in the time and effort to give this show a chance, you have already wasted enough time. Start watching it. Now. Start. Watching. It. Now. Start watching it now. Go. Do. Watch. You're still reading, why are you still reading, you're as bad at taking orders as Invincible is at taking orders from Cecil. WATCH IT. NOW!!

Deadwood is highly engaging and unique. It's everything an HBO special could want in an average or even above-average show. It's about on the same level as Westworld (not because they share a similar "Western" theme). It is actually one of those hidden gems, the "shows that flew underneath the radar" kind of thing.
It's brilliantly written, and even more brilliantly casted. The acting is superb. Lots of subtle action and twisted Western drama to catch anyone's attention.
The biggest flaw though? IT'S SO DARN HARD TO FOLLOW. I consider myself a highly intelligent person, and even I got lost with the dialogue and plot development. Don't get me wrong, I love it. Feels, authentic. But holy crap it was worse than a viewer's first (or even second) viewing attempt of Game Of Thrones. The plot is just ridiculous to follow along with the period-piece dialect.
Other than that, amazing show.
