How I Caught My Killer (2023)
Weird editing
The stories are compelling but the editing/ production is so strange. It felt like watching a compilation of trailers for the series rather than succinct, fluid story telling. The music is genuinely terrible. The narration is way too over the top and hammy. It's not all bad and I respect the makers trying to put together something watchable and fast-paced but they unfortunately missed the mark. If there's a second season, I would like to see something a little less hyperactive and a little better paced.
Positives: good stories and doesn't over stay it's welcome.
Negatives: poorly pieced together.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (2022)
Mostly engrossing
I enjoyed the first two episodes and looking forward to the rest of the series. It seems to be building to something very nicely. It is set so far before the films that it feels like its own thing but also feels like it will move in much the same direction as the original trilogy.
The dwarfs bring a bit of much needed levity but the tone works quite well overall.
Only downsides are the Hobbity people are very dull and I could not care what happens to them and I hope they don't feature prominently. It is also bit too Downton elvey at times with all these posh dislikeable people talking too much about nothing of consequence.
Halo (2022)
Hoping for a second season
I love it. It's not perfect but it is extremely watchable. I haven't played the games so didn't go in with any expectations. It shares similar themes to The Expanse which is one of my all time faves. Even the characters who were a bit annoying at first grew on me by the end. If you enter into this as a fan of the genre and not wrapped up in expecting something specific, then you should enjoy it.
Take a Hike (2021)
Loved it! Hope it gets another series
It's dopey and mindless but it was great to watch and unwind with each day after work. It's wholesome. And it gave me some good walkspiration. Gilbert's narration tops it off.
Security (2017)
Such a pleasant surprise!
I really enjoyed this. It was a mindlessly fun escape. Nothing too original about it but executed extremely well. It had no right to be as good as it was. I might be so positive because my expectations were low, but fans of the genre won't be disappointed.
The Little Things (2021)
It has more depth than initially appears
I was expecting a straight forward murder mystery but it's more about the detectives' mental state than anything else. I like that it was left uncertain. I personally think that Swarma wasn't the killer. He seemed to be a weirdo with a twisted fascination. The police scanner gave him information not available to the public and he was playing the role of the killer, like 8 years previously. But the main takeaway is how crimes of such a horrendous nature effect the detectives working those cases. Enjoyed it a lot.
The Empty Man (2020)
Very atmospheric and interesting
A mystery that will keep you thinking afterwards. Lead actor was great. I've probably rated it a bit too high but it gave me a lot of enjoyment and it deserves a better overall rating.
The Tunnel: Episode #3.6 (2018)
Poor conclusion
First two series were very entertaining and satisfying. This third series was all over the place and required so much suspension of disbelief, that you watch it and feel like you've wasted your time. The villians were extremely implausible.
Jupiter's Legacy (2021)
Decent overall but incredibly unoriginal
After having watched the first season, I can say that I enjoyed it for the most part but it was nothing I haven't seen before and have seen done much better.
I was slightly infuriated at times by the lazy writing. The way they got their powers was supposed to be some extremely difficult ordeal in which they had to sacrifice a lot and prove themselves worthy. Nope. That definitely wasn't the case. Looked only moderately hard and they sacrificed nothing! At least give it another pass instead of settling on that. Seems like it was thought up by someone in the shower on the morning of filming.
Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn (2020)
Dull and tedious
So bad it was often just irritating. I can appreciate they were going for an over the top comic book cartoonish vibe, but it was executed poorly. The characters were extremely two dimensional and some of the acting was dreadful, looking at you Ewan McGregor. All of the fight scenes looked like watching rehearsals rather than the finished product. And the voice-over was lazy.
Cold Pursuit (2019)
Not what I was expecting
This film is a lot more layered than all of the initial information was suggesting. Lots of character development, funny at times, good pace, and many moving parts to keep you hooked.
The Silencing (2020)
Captivating
I found myself really drawn into this movie. A great lead performance and a story that moves along at a good pace and doesn't over stay its welcome.
And for the most part I had no idea where it was going. It felt fresh and not something I had seen a lot before.
Alita: Battle Angel (2019)
Unexpectedly great
This was such a thrill to watch, from the very start. I thought it was going to be a CGI mess like transformers but I was very wrong. Alita is likable and interesting, they told her backstory in a way that didn't feel forced, and she is a badass!
I have only seen it once but I already think it has high rewatchability.
Hopefully there will be a sequel.
Revenge (2017)
Unrealistic and brilliant
It requires a little suspension of disbelief but it repays that by being a really fun watch. So much suspense, a protagonist you want to win, bad guys you hate and it has a great finale.
Gemini Man (2019)
Surpassed my low expectations
It's probably not a film that will stick in my mind, but I definitely enjoyed it whilst watching it.
It's probably Will Smith at the best he's been for a long time.
Parts of it are a little flat and the main concept is a bit weak, but there's certainly enough throughout to maintain your interest.
