Neukdaesanyang (2022)
'Project Wolf Hunting' Falters with Super Soldier Plot
The depiction of blood in the movie "Project Wolf Hunting" bears resemblance to water, as it is commonly known that the human body is composed of approximately two-thirds water. This similarity is evident every time a character experiences violence or injury. While I harbor no particular aversion to excessively gory films, I found this particular production to be excessive to the point of diminishing my enjoyment, primarily due to its incongruity between the visual portrayal and the film's serious tone.
Despite possessing certain inherent flaws, I did find merit in the initial half of the movie. The plot, centered around criminals on a ship evading capture and engaging in conflicts with law enforcement, was rather conventional but adequately engaging. However, it is during the introduction of the super soldier narrative that the film begins its descent into disappointment. Chief among its shortcomings are the remarkably poor sound effects, particularly when the super soldier character is in motion. I am at a loss as to the intended nature of these sounds, as they fail to align with the film's commitment to maintaining a serious atmosphere. The same critique applies to the sound accompanying the super soldier's violent actions, which appears to be an attempt at vocal emulation rather than an authentic representation.
Additionally, the movie fails to maximize its potential for compelling fight sequences. Rather than exhibiting a realistic reaction to combat, the surrounding characters often remain stationary, appearing bewildered, until they are inevitably attacked and dispatched.
Consequently, while the first half of the movie managed to hold my interest, the subsequent portion left me disengaged entirely, and the ending suggests an intention to develop a sequel.
That concludes my assessment.
Sincerely,
Me.
Monster Hunter: Rise (2021)
Monster Hunter Rise Entertaining Despite Technical Constraints
"Monster Hunter World was the first game in the Monster Hunter series that I had the opportunity to play. In my childhood, I sporadically played an older title from the series on the PlayStation for a few hours, but with limited success. However, Monster Hunter World captivated me and I invested over 250 hours into it. Playing with friends and acquaintances was incredibly entertaining (yet sometimes equally frustrating), and the graphics were stunning. Upon hearing that Monster Hunter Rise was releasing on the Nintendo Switch, I was disappointed since although I own a Nintendo Switch, it seldom gets used, thus, I did not have the opportunity to play Monster Hunter Rise back then. Nonetheless, with the release on the PS4/PS5, this has now changed. The technical constraints of the Nintendo Switch are unequivocally evident in the game, with "The Last Of Us" on the PS3 having had superior graphics. Nonetheless, Monster Hunter Rise proved to be immensely enjoyable, providing a typical level of challenge and reward when executing the final, decisive attack in a combo. The new wirebug mechanic was a delightful addition, providing additional attacking, dodging, and mobility options. The game follows the customary Monster Hunter format, with grind forming 99% of the gameplay, but typically keeping players motivated throughout. The sole point of contention is the "Rampage" missions, which operate like a tower defense game mode. These missions are easy to solo in single-player mode, but require a full team for multiplayer, a condition that I did not always meet. Additionally, this mode can be tedious and drawn-out. Notwithstanding this issue, Monster Hunter Rise remains a splendid game, plagued only by hardware limitations."
Blue Streak (1999)
Blue Streak is a hilarious comedy-action film
Blue Streak is a hilarious comedy-action film from 1999 that is one of my childhood favorite. The movie features Martin Lawrence as Miles Logan, a sympathetic criminal who poses as a police officer to retrieve a diamond he had stashed in a police station. Lawrence delivers an excellent performance, showcasing his comedic timing and charisma.
One of the highlights of the film is the fantastic humor. From start to finish, the movie has a wonderful sense of humor that keeps the audience laughing throughout. The witty one-liners and comedic situations are perfectly executed, making for a fun and enjoyable experience.
Dave Chappelle's role as Tulley, a lanky and inexperienced criminal, is another standout performance. Chappelle brings his unique style of humor to the character, making him a hilarious and memorable part of the movie.
Overall, Blue Streak is a well-crafted comedy that has a perfect cast, fantastic humor, and a story that never gets boring. Martin Lawrence shines as a sympathetic criminal, and the supporting cast delivers memorable performances that make the film a must-watch for anyone looking for a good laugh.
Scream (1996)
A Genre-Defining Classic
One of the most notable things about "Scream" is the new standard it set for the slasher genre. At the time of its release, horror movies had become formulaic and predictable, relying on jump scares and gore to scare audiences. "Scream" changed all that by subverting the genre's conventions and introducing a self-awareness that was absent in most horror movies of the time.
The meta commentary is another highlight of the movie. The characters in the film are aware of the horror movie tropes and frequently reference them. This adds a layer of humor to the film and makes it more engaging for audiences who are familiar with the genre.
The suspension is masterfully done. The movie keeps audiences on the edge of their seats, never revealing too much too soon. The killers are not some otherworldly and infallible beings but instead, they make mistakes, adding to the realism of the movie.
The characters are well-written and their motivations are believable. Sidney Prescott, played by Neve Campbell, is a strong protagonist who is fighting to survive against a killer who is targeting her and her friends. The other characters in the film are also well-developed and have their own unique personalities.
The beginning scene of "Scream" with Drew Barrymore is iconic and sets the tone for the rest of the movie. It is a suspenseful and terrifying scene that immediately grabs the audience's attention.
Finally, the twists are some of the most memorable in horror movie history. The identity of the killer is revealed in a shocking twist that audiences didn't see coming, making "Scream" a classic of the genre.
Overall, "Scream" is a groundbreaking horror movie that set a new standard for the slasher genre. Its meta commentary, suspenseful plot, well-written characters, and memorable twists make it a classic that is still watched and enjoyed today.
Mafia: Definitive Edition (2020)
Mafia Video Game Boasts Superb Setting and Storyline, But Hampered by Outdated Gameplay Mechanics
The video game "Mafia" boasts a superb setting and a fitting storyline, set in the fictional city of Lost Heaven during the 1930s in the United States. The sequences and, especially, the facial animations of the characters are fantastically executed, thereby contributing to the game's immersive qualities. If I were to evaluate solely on these merits, I would confidently rate the game 7, if not 8 out of 10 stars. However, the game is hampered by outdated and often imprecise gameplay mechanics. Movements are executed rather vaguely and coarsely than precisely. Additionally, the camera can be unpredictable, and the driving mechanics often make vehicular chases tedious instead of fun and exciting. While the game initially provided ample enjoyment, my expectations were not fully met due to the game's gameplay inadequacies. Consequently, I played the game less and less, sometimes only completing one chapter in a week. Regrettably, despite the promising setting and intriguing characters, "Mafia" ultimately proved to be a disappointment.
Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001)
Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back: Nostalgic, Silly, and Star-Studded
As a fan of Kevin Smith's View Askewniverse, "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back" holds a special place in my heart. Released in 2001, this film features Smith's signature style of humor that blends pop culture references, raunchy jokes, and witty banter between the titular characters. If you're a fan of Smith's work, you'll find plenty to love here.
One of the movie's standout features is the impressive roster of celebrity cameos, with everyone from Ben Affleck to Mark Hamill making appearances. It's always fun to see famous faces popping up in unexpected roles, and the cameos add an extra layer of entertainment to an already entertaining film.
Of course, "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back" is not a movie to be taken too seriously. The plot is over-the-top and downright silly at times, with the titular characters embarking on a wild cross-country adventure to stop a movie based on their likeness from being made. The humor is crude and juvenile, but that's part of the charm.
For me, "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back" is a movie that's not only funny, but also holds a lot of nostalgic value. It was part of my childhood and remains a guilty pleasure to this day. If you're in the mood for a raunchy comedy with a lot of heart and even more laughs, this movie is definitely worth checking out.
Halo Infinite (2021)
Halo Infinite's Open World Disappoints
Halo Infinite takes a new direction and offers players an open-world experience for the first time. However, those who follow the relatively short story will quickly realize that the open world is made up of several small areas, eventually leading to a linear area in the last few hours of gameplay that cannot be left, feeling like previous Halo games. The open world seems like a means to an end rather than something the game truly required. Additionally, the small open world suffers from various issues, like many other games. The world is empty, and there are no interesting points that invite exploration, leading to the typical and dull task of completing points on the map. Unfortunately, the story is also not particularly exciting and did not necessitate an open world. Perhaps something better could have been created if the goal was not an open-world game. Nonetheless, the gameplay, which is the biggest strength of the Halo series, is incredibly enjoyable, and the game deserves credit for the fact that I had fun playing it for 15-20 hours. After Halo Guardians, it represents a significant step forward, but the series has delivered much better in the past decades.
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart (2021)
Ratchet and Clank: A Must-Play Game
The game is truly fantastic! I haven't played a game like this in years, having lost interest in this genre and assuming that I would no longer enjoy it. I was mistaken. Ratchet and Clank is visually stunning and plays exceptionally well. The gameplay is incredibly fun and the characters are endearing. The switch between the two protagonists provides much-needed variety and does wonders for the story as a whole.
The gameplay is smooth and seamless, and the various types of weapons offer more than enough diversity so that the battles never become monotonous.
The game boasts wonderful worlds, characters, and gameplay. I never would have thought so when I first started playing it.
Crown Trick (2019)
Challenging dungeon crawler with nice artwork
Crown Trick is a fun and challenging game with a unique and charming art style. The gameplay is the highlight, as you navigate through procedurally generated dungeons with a wide range of weapons and abilities. The difficulty is tough but fair, with each floor presenting new challenges and opportunities to test your skills.
Unfortunately, the weapon balance can be a bit of an issue, with some weapons being much stronger than others, leading to a lack of variety in weapon choice. Additionally, the game can get a bit repetitive as you progress through the floors, which may not be for everyone.
Overall, Crown Trick is an enjoyable dungeon-crawling experience with great gameplay and an attractive art style, but with some issues with weapon balance and repetition.
Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen (2013)
I just love it
Although this game is not without its imperfections, I must give it a perfect score of 10 out of 10. It's hard to put into words why I loved it so much - perhaps it was the fantasy setting, complete with knights, magic, and enormous monsters, including dragons that you could climb onto and stab in the eyes. The story, while intriguing in its own way, unfortunately lacked depth. Similarly, the characters were not particularly remarkable, although the character editor was a nice touch. Despite the game's relatively small open world, I found it to be expansive due to the constant threat of enemies, particularly at night. I adored the gameplay, the world, and the overall experience. The "Dark Arisen" DLC was a fantastic, grim addition to the game. I have lost count of how many times I have completed the game and how many hundreds of hours I have invested in it.
