Snowpiercer: A Beacon for Us All (2022)
The writers have given up, and so have I
This show has become truly ridiculous. Nothing that happened in season 3 makes any kind of sense, or was any kind of interesting, and like any TV series that jumped the shark, all the characters are now caricatures of their previous selves, making insane choices whose only purpose is to add fake drama. Move on folks, there's nothing to see here.
Hoops (2020)
Extremely funny
I enjoyed every moment of the first season. Very funny, very fun, and the protagonist is a lovable character despite his negative attributes. Can't wait for a second season.
Game of Thrones: Oathkeeper (2014)
Possibly the worst GOT episode ever
Well it started out okay, but the entire Nights Watch scene, which dominated the episode, was absolutely terrible. The entire story is completely fabricated (i.e. does not occur in the book), and it is such a ridicules story I just can't believe it. Who the heck wrote this? Not to mention the acting was pretty bad throughout these scenes.
I understand that changes have to be made due to lack of time, to further the story, etc., and up till now I had no qualms with any of the changes, but this one was so bad, it really ruined the episode for me.
I love this series, but this is the first time I did not enjoy an episode. Hope the next one is better.
The Promotion (2008)
A slow, boring drama disguised as a comedy
I went into The Promotion hoping for a nice comedy to pass the evening, seeing as, after all, it was Sean Williams Scott and this John Reilly fella. But don't let yourself be fooled, this is not even near a comedy.
The Promotion is a by-the-book drama film disguised as a comedy. The default story about a guy competing for his dream job with a probably more qualified, more experienced, more successfully rival. The story is so boring that even the actors themselves seem bored by it.
Not that it's that bad, it's watchable, but in the end, there's nothing to it. Don't expect any laughs, you probably won't find them here.
Life Stinks (1991)
A charming comedy
Seeing as the vote average was pretty low, and the fact that the clerk in the video store thought it was "just OK", I didn't have much expectations when renting this film.
But contrary to the above, I enjoyed it a lot. This is a charming movie. It didn't need to grow on me, I enjoyed it from the beginning. Mel Brooks gives a great performance as the lead character, I think somewhat different from his usual persona in his movies.
There's not a lot of knockout jokes or something like that, but there are some rather hilarious scenes, and overall this is a very enjoyable and very easy to watch film.
Very recommended.
Spider-Man 3 (2007)
Somebody please shoot me
The title pretty much sums the feeling I had when watching this 140min never-ending flop. The plot is ridicules, Maguire is laughable, Dunst is annoying and whiny, exactly as she was on the first two movies, which were bad just as well.
The computer effects are flashy and expensive yet ridicules as hell. Spiderman was never a realistic character, but this movie is so unrealistic that one cannot even believe that imagination can create such things.
Just like the two movies that preceded this catastrophe, romantic drama seems to be more dominant than action in this movie. Both protagonists (Maguire and Dunst) are whiny crybabies, and you can't help but get the feeling you wanna jump into the TV and punch them in the face. Heck, if someone was crazy enough to turn such imagination into reality, maybe I can do so too.
Spare yourself, do not waste time on this movie!
The Da Vinci Code (2006)
A poorly made interpretation of a properly made book
The DaVinci Code is arguably one of the best thriller books ever written. The plot is interesting, fast paced and the suspense is constant, from beginning to end. Dan Brown knows exactly which parts of the plot to thicken/lengthen and which to shorten.
The same can NOT be said on the movie. Ron Howard's work as director seems highly inadequate. Important parts of the book were not emphasized, most times shown so casually, the viewer can hardly notice them, and sometimes not shown at all. On the other hand, less important parts of the book were over emphasized. Weird interpretations were given and changes were done to key elements in the book, sometimes such ridicules changes that only lessen the suspense of the movie.
Seems to me that if I hadn't read the book prior to seeing this movie, I wouldn't have understood many parts of the movie.
While the book builds the plot carefully, never letting the reader get lost or lose interest, the movie simply bombs the viewer with information. Mysterious riddles are solved within seconds, ancient secrets are revealed as if were hidden behind a glass window (For example, a long search at one of the world's biggest libraries became a 3 seconds internet search using a cellular phone), deductions are made with no basis whatsoever. Nothing seems to go wrong. Suddenly Langdon and Neveu find the grail's previous burial place and a library of grail documents. Suddenly Langdon decides Sophie is a descendant of Jesus. Suddenly a woman appears and claims she's Sophie's grandmother, and Sophie accepts all of it as if irreputable truth.
Though initially impressed by the cast, the main stars' performances were also highly inadequate. Tom Hanks was very disappointing as Robert Langdon. He is boring, unrelatable and so unconvincing, to the point of being ridicules in the eys of the viewer. Audrey Tautou was a bad choice for Sophie Neveu. She is uninteresting, has virtually no chemistry with Hanks, and leaves the impression of being neither smart nor mentally strong, as Neveu of the book. Ian McKellen was a disappointment as well. He makes Teabing seem an unserious figure. The scene were he is revealed as 'The Teacher' is badly made, unconvincing and, as many times in the film, not loyal to the book. Teabing's footprints in the Issac Newton scene are laughable, as can be said on the scene were he is being taken into custody by the police. Jean Reno was also boring, and seemed to be a remote figure that somehow found its way into the plot. Only Paul Bettany as Silas seemed to give an adequate performance.
Overall, this movie is a huge disappointment. It is boring, hard to understand, and makes the controversial, yet plausible ideas presented in the book seem impossible and ridicules in the movie.
See it if you want to, but don't waste your time unless you've read the book.
