Swansong: Story of Occi Byrne (2009)
The Best Irish Film I have ever seen.
OK... so I had a very small role in this movie as an extra...little did I know that my scene was shot 10 feet away from Jodie Whittaker and Gerard McSoreley...and they were watching me! But to the point, this movie is SPECTACULAR! The story is truly touching and it will have you gasping, laughing, crying, and much more too! Hard to believe also is the fact that this brilliant movie is based on a one man play by the Writer and Director of the movie; Connor McDermottroe. I can proudly boast that this film contains some of the best scenery in my home town, set against the backdrop of 1970's and 1980's Ireland. The story flows smoothly and brings us on the journey of young Occi who struggles with his own mental wellbeing, whilst also trying to care for his mother (Jodi Whittaker) who has been disowned by her father (Gerard Mc Soreley). His journey is tough but makes for great cinema. Caution to parents: This film is most definitely not suitable for anyone under the age of 15 (13 if you are lenient) but is most definitely worth whatever you must pay to see it.
Orphan (2009)
Welcome back to good horror.
After years of pointless slasher movies that like to pass themselves off as horror, and movies about haunted houses that couldn't scare a child, I was hesitant about seeing orphan, but after the almost two hours I spent at the theater I can gladly admit, this movie was money very well spent. Its a clever blend of deep psychological thriller, with the right amount of horrific detail to leave you on the edge of your seat, horrified at what you have just seen, but begging for more. What can I say about Esther? The young actress who played her, will most certainly be winning Oscars in years to come, for a young girl of 12, she acts with the experience of someone 2 or 3 times her own age, delivering some truly memorable lines and some horrific scenes. Her portrayal of Esther is chilling, memorable, and believable, much like the movie itself. The first scene sets the tone for the movie, giving just enough insight to what has happened, while not dwelling forever on what will happen, and then the story progresses seamlessly into the main plot. The plot advances on a slowly moving, but well timed frame, and every scene sets up the next perfectly. The end comes right on cue, not too early or late, with the right amount of suspense to keep you on the edge of your seat. Do not hesitate, get to this movie now, and be prepared for the best horror thriller suspense movie since 1995.
Wonder Woman (2009)
In live action it would be epic!
I am happy to say that this is a very decent movie. Wonder woman has waited so long for her own epic, albeit a straight to DVD release. The story takes us through her roots, where she came from, and more importantly, who she is. The story works, and it has its own originality. What could make it better? If it were live action thats what. If they added a little more to fill it to maybe 100 minutes, and got someone young new and able for the lead part, and maybe removed some of this Steve's chauvinist's attitude, then this Wonder Woman movie in Live action WOULD BE EPIC! This gives me hope that the big screen live action will be close to perfect.
Prison of Secrets (1997)
Brilliant
Drugs, Prostitution, rape. This is not her crime, this is her punishment. This is one of the rare TV movies that is enjoyable. Based upon true events, Lynn starts up her own company to raise some money for both her and her boss. Her boss thinks this is criminal, and has her arrested. She is sentenced to the maximum for the crime. What she witnesses in prison will shock you. Drugs, prostitution and murder, these are her punishments. She witnesses as her friends are forced into prostitution by the prison wardens. She quickly makes it known what is going on in the prison.Finola Hughes gives a breathtaking performance, as does Stephanie Zimbalist. Well worth a watch.Good for a night in.
St. Trinian's (2007)
This is what you call "modernisation"
Okay, so first I want you to take into account what other critics say about this film. Then, forget it.
This film is witty, charming, and hilarious and outrageous. Critics say it does not suit the originals, however if you look close, you will see everything from the original packed up in there. This film has been modernized to suit today's audience. That is what you must understand about this film. Rupert Everett is perfect in the role(s) of the Fritton twins. Colin Firth makes a very believable minister of Education. Russel Brand portrays Flash Harry with all the wit. The film retains the famous thigh high skirts and suspender stockings, with devious pyromaniac little girls, and the unruly school girls. Definitely worth the money.
The Golden Compass (2007)
Truly unusual
I don't think I have seen a movie this...weird, unusual or just plain bad in quite a while. The plot is too much like the chronicles of Narnia, and the end battle is disappointing. Saying that, I thought a lot of the special effects were quite good. Daniel Craig was really appalling.Nicole Kidman was good, but should stay away from films like this. Hopefully sequels are not on the way.I sat through this film, and I still ponder how I managed to stay awake. It could have been spectacular.Thestory was good, but the film was but together poorly. How it gets 6.6 is a mystery to me.This film bored and annoyed me. Shocking. Terrible. These are just a few words that describe how This film made me feel. A demon is an evil creature, not a talking animal. Witches do not carry around bows and arrows everywhere. The plot is too predictable. Not worth the money, however young children may be amused to see this. "Do you want to ride me?" Er.......no!! Sick thing to say in a kids movie.
Norbit (2007)
Ugh...
I rented this movie hoping for a laugh. I thought this would be funny and maybe good entertainment. I was highly disappointed. Eddie Murphy usually always delivers high class comedy but this was just a like a "nutty professor" spin off. Again, Murphy in more latex, a voice for Rasputia that sounds highly like Mrs. Klump from nutty professor. The story wasn't very well structured and in one scene you can even see the fat suit separate from the actual skin. The only good thing about this is that is has a cry baby dork that is only microscopically funny. Don't get this if you want comedy, but if you want a bad movie, this is for you!
Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Anniversary (2007)
Perfection
I am a strong tomb raider fan, and have played the game since it first came out. I can honestly say this is the best tomb raider game I have played. Legend brought Lara out of her bad time on angel of darkness (can we forget that?) and into a new era. Legend was only the taste of what was yet to come. I bought the game on June 1st in Ireland, and did not stop playing until I killed the final boss. This game is a perfect remake AND re-imagining of the original. My advice: get it now!!! I can hardly wait for the next one... LARA RULES! Make sure you play this one because it is well worth your money. If you are a Lara fan, you will take my advice.
Absolutely Fabulous (1992)
Unrealistically hilarious.
Hilarious. That is about the only word I can think of when I think about this show.I have watched it from the very beginning (well, I have every episode on DVD). This is a perfect representation of a rich mother on her young daughter's case. Perfect if you want to split your sides laughing. A great success for Jenny Saunders! Too bad it's been canceled! :(. But on a more serious note, if you do get a chance to see this show, take your opportunity. June Whitfield plays the hilarious "mother" of Edina. Joanna Lumley is perfect as the coke addicted alcoholic. Julia Sawalha is just perfect for the daughter "Saffy". Saunders is the hilarious genius and mixed up mother! YOU MUST WATCH AB FAB!
X-Men: The Last Stand (2006)
Dark phoenix vs. X-men
First, I was never an X-men fan. In fact, this was actually the first x-men movie I saw. I went expecting the usual superhero movie with tight clothes and too many crap sfx. But, I have to say this movie was very enjoyable. The entire cast returns (including Famke Janssen) but Bryan Singer dropped out. The movie is actually about love in many ways. Scott is still saddened over Jean's "death". Storm with yet another hairstyle and the death of a well loved character is all there with loads of action. As we saw near the end of X2 jean sacrifices herself. But, she comes back as Phoenix, a darker Jean who feels the professor only wants to control her. Jean has a few new characteristics about her. Her eyes darken and her skin adapts a dead appearance when she uses her power. Storm, also having a bigger part can now fly in the movie. Magneto is back with his brotherhood and manages to get Jean onto his side (with catastrophic results on Alcatraz Island) A big change from the "Dark Phoenix saga" and the comics but it's all there. 9/10
Hex (2004)
Best show ever!
I started watching this show in '04. I watched the pilot and loved it. I like Cassie because she is just a typical teen in school. Few friends, not part of a big crowd but she wants it a lot. When she discovers her powers, things get interesting. She can move things without touching them, set things alight with her mind etc. But, her powers are part of the cause of her mate Thelma dying. Cassie has a love hate relationship with Azazeal leader a group of fallen angels. As the show progresses , Cassie becomes pregnant with Azazeal's child. The child grows at a quick speed. Cassie tries to terminate the birth but Azazeal manages to stop it. I turns out Cassie only had a C-section and gave birth to an evil son (born on Christmas day). In season 2 Ella arrives to kill the child but Cassie's feelings get in the way and she sacrifices herself for the child. The child ages about 16-18 years in 6 months! He takes over a school and plans to destroy the world. A good show if you want drama, comedy, a little action and romance with a lot of horror. 10/10
Carrie (1976)
My name is carrie!!!!!
This is the first adaption of Stephen King's first novel "Carrie". The movie Stars Sissy Spacek in the lead. First, I saw this movie on T.V when I was about 10 years old and I immediately loved it. I loved the idea of someone being able to move objects without touching them. The story goes as follows; A teenage girl is being tortured by her peers. And the fact that she has her first period in the shower doesn't help. But nobody knows that she is telekinetic (or psychokinetic if you prefer). One of the girls, Sue Snell (Amy Irving) takes pity on Carrie and asks her boy friend Tommy (William Katt) to take Carrie to the prom. BIG MISTAKE. When Chris Hargensen (Nancy Allen) gets banned from going and hears that Carrie is going, she and her boyfriend Billy Nolan (John Travolta) hatch a plan to humiliate her. When Carrie tells her mother Margaret (Fantastically portrayed by Piper Laurie) that she is going Margaret (Who is a religion fanatic) thinks it's a sin and forbids it. But, Carrie goes Anyway. Carrie and Tommy are voted King and Queen of the prom (It was fixed by Chris). Then whilst standing on the stage a bucket of pig blood is dumped over Carrie. Then she kills everyone using her Telekinetic powers. A fantastic movie.
Carrie (2002)
A telekinetic high school student is humiliated at the prom.
I think this version of Carrie is quite good. It's more faithful to the novel. I think Angela Bettis was excellent at portraying Carrie. Patricia Clarkson's portrayal of the abusive ,over religious mother was poor. Personally,I think Piper Laurie's Portrayal of Margaret was superb and so powerful. The prom scene was good but the pig blood looked unrealistic. The special effects are OK and are way better than the original's. A few things have changed though. For example: the name of the school is Ewin high, not bates high, Ms. Collins is now called Ms. Desjardin, And watch out for that twist ending! I think this movie is worth viewing and is very good.
