The Wire (2002)
Top 10, maybe even Top 5 and an absolute must watch for any TV show fan.
After the credits rolled and a few hours after finishing the show I have realized this show meant a lot more to me than I originally thought. The only flaw in this entire show is that the newspaper storyline has a rocky start in Season 5 and while a lot of people will have you believe that it tainted Season 5 the newspaper storyline actually blends into the final season nicely, sure its not as compelling as any of the other seasons showcase of certain elements of Baltimore but by the second half of Season 5 you realize the show still has every bit as much to say as the rest of the series. Theres not a single storyline that is not wrapped up and you don't see that in a lot of TV, seeing the main characters grow throughout the seasons is very satisfying, one of the things I felt by the end, it especially makes me happy how every character had their stories wrapped up, whether they died or got to keep living. This show also probably the most realistic writing I've ever heard and seen brought to life in any show, it never feels fake and every character feels like a real person, when it comes to writing I rank this number one for any TV show. When it comes to ranking: I would go: 4, 3, 1, 2 and then 5 at last(even though I ranked it last, its still a great season). I am giving this a 10/10, check it out!
Resident Evil (2022)
Decent Zombie Apocalypse Show, Iffy Resident Evil Adaption
This show is getting review bombed by people who didn't watch past an episode or 2, they didn't give the show a fair chance before reviewing. This show is not a 1/10 nor is it the 10/10 I gave it(have to balance out the unfair 1/10s somehow). Instead, its just a decent Apocalypse show that every now and then has cameos from Resident Evil monsters with the occasional reminder that the games are canon to the show. I want to start out with the shows bighest strength compared to other media and thats this shows female characters, for some reason in both Andersons films and in WTRC they think making every single female a Mary Sue with no weaknesses makes them "good" characters, but it doesn't. Here, we get a main character who time and time again is being put in danger and only barely making it out, and while she may not be an actual character from the games thats about as Resident Evil as the first few games(well Capcom made Claire and Jill act like Mary Sues in the remakes, but you get my point), I honestly liked Jade and Billie both in the future and in flashbacks(Jade faring much better in post apocalypse than her sister tho). Another aspect I enjoyed was Lance Reddick as Albert Wesker, while we only get to see clones and like 2 minutes time of him as actual Wesker, I enjoyed the clones and the bits of Weskers personality that came out. Honestly, the reveal that him and his daughters only exist because of OG Weskers need to have multiple versions of himself made the ideas of this MUCH easier to bare than if the Wesker we saw was the OG wesker because that would have made ZERO sense. I gotta say my one gripe was that OG Wesker doesn't have his red eyes. Now the dialogue and writing sometimes can range from good to decent to downright awful and thats unfortunate, I actually did cringe less at this than I did during either Andersons series and during WTRC so that says a lot. As far as things go, beside from the first RE movie with Mila Jovovich, this will likely be the best live action Resident Evil content we get for a VERY long time. As a show I'm giving it a 7/10, as for an RE adaption its either a 6/10or 5/10 for me. But hey, it definitely suprised me by how much i liked it at the end and you should totally watch the whole thing before making dumbass comments about a show you haven't even watched fully.
Barry: candy asses (2022)
Another great episode.
Bill Hader is such a good director and writer and to think we may have not known had Barry never been made(hes also a fantastic dramedy/drama actor but this was already known if you've seen some of his other work). This episode sets up the finale of Barrys downfall, everything he did in Season 1 and 2 has finally come back to bite him in the ass. Seeing as Season 4 is happening I am curious to see how its handled, imagine if Walter Whites secret was exposed to as many people as Barrys been exposed to but in Season 3... its going to be VERY interesting watching this play out and seeing the aftermath.
Skins (2007)
Best Teen Show in General
My rating is only for the first 4 seasons. First generation is well written from beginning to end and they get a fantastic send off imo, they all have relatable struggles and they feel like real people. The second generation gets an AWFUL ending due to them being forced to end the season 2 episodes earlier then planned so like I understand why its not as good as the rest but man it really hurts cause I loved those characters. I can't decide which generation characters I like more but I will say I like Freddy more than the main character in the first generation. This show is fantastic because I remember it even though I watched it all the way back in 2018. Check this show out, if you don't like anticlimatic endings don't check out the second generation.
Smallville (2001)
Inconsistent Quality but worth a watch
The first 3 seasons of this show are really really good aside from the villian of the week schtick, I also really like seasons 8-10 due to it finally just becoming an all out DC extravaganza, letting Clark finally begin his vigilante career and bringing in lots of characters from the comics(and in a good way or the most part too). Seasons 4-7 are where I'm very iffy, there are some really good episodes and elements sprinkled throughout suchas the cast and well written episodes/characters(the episodes however can be really good one episode but then absolutely awful the next). I loved this show when I was 12 and me and my mom watch it and I still love it now, personally its in my top 10 not due to how good it is but because of what it means for me, this show really got me into DC(the Rocksteady games kind of got me into it but not like this did). Anywho, check the show out.
Black Sails: X. (2015)
Great Dialogue Driven Episode
Another great episode of Black Sails. For whatever reason I stopped watching this show for a while, I probably got caught up in another show. But the first episode I come back to immediately pulls me back into this world of pirates. This show tells its story like no other television series I have seen. It's very dialogue heavy but none of it ever feels like filler and whenever action does happen it has meaning, the new pirate in town cuts the head off of one of his crew because he suspects he is a snitch/traitor or maybe he just did it for fun. This scene was actually terrifying, I've seen plenty of decapitation scenes in movies. But the way its played out here in such a realistic fashion, Guthrie comes into the room, the crewmate screaming as his head is being cut off. It was actually hard to watch and had my anxiety up. This is how I knew how invested I was, I can sit and watch Saw and not be scared because of how death and grotesque scenes are treated as no big deal but this show treats its world with care. Also the characters are so incredibly written, which is a must for such a dialogue driven show. Also Season 2's production and the filmmaking has grown since Season 1. It looks very cinematic in a lot of places, you might even mistake this for an HBO show with the quality on display. The only thing that holds this episode back are the flashbacks involving Flint but knowing this show, sitting through those scenes will payoff in the long run. 9/10.
Warrior: The Blood and the Sh*t (2019)
The Best Episode Yet
Wow this show has been continuously good since the first episode I saw. But I didn't really know if I would call it must watch television. But then I watched this episode and oh wow. Watch it, watch it on the biggest screen you have. This episode was kind of a standalone but it does develop the main character and his friend some more(forgive me for not remembering their names I paused watching the show and just picked it back up recently. Anywho, the characters introduced in this episode are all given personality from the way they are dressed to how they talk to how they written. So much thought was put into this one episode and it truly shows. The action in this episode in my opinion is the best on the show yet, theres also quite a bit of it. You would think one man kicking a bunch of men with guns passes would feel unrealistic but like I said a lot of thought was put into it and they make it feel plausible, that takes a lot of talent. Also the main character has incredible screen presence, his line deliveries have been top notch this entire series, his friend finally gets some development, we learn how he feels out of place and he meets a girl he is truly interested in compared to other girls hes been shown to only want to have sex with before. The music in this episode was really good as well, fits the western theme. I just absolutely loved this episode, I am so glad I picked this back up. Don't let the slow beginning of this episode stop you, it's all a well thought out setup and hook for the rest. Btw I don't just hand out 10's, so definitely watch the show especially with the good news it was just picked up for a third season!
Titans: Jason Todd (2018)
Wasted Potential
The episode that showed me this show had true potential, don't get me wrong I enjoyed the Doom Patrol episode but I chalked that up to Geoff John's writing. The episode before this was decent as well(not great and I would be hard pressed to even call it good), but moments from Episodes 1-3 were genuinely bad, I was very very concerned and the quality of the show felt very off. But when this episode rolled along I was incredibly surprised by how good it was. So first off I want to talk about Curran Walter's as Jason Todd, this was a perfect casting decision and I loved every moment he was onscreen. He captures the recklessness of Jason Todd as Robin in his performance and when he talks about his troubled background he really sells it. Jason Todd sees being Robin as like a game, both the writing and Curran sell this. The action in this episode is probably the best the series has had, it's really only one scene but that one scene has everything about Titans action that is so good. This is the first episode I really cared about Dick moving on from Batman and this "edgy" take on Dick Grayson and that's because there is actual character development in this episode, thanks to some brief but well done flashbacks and just exploring Dicks life Pre Batman, I think this is because it's hard to develop Dicks hatred for Batman and Bruce when they weren't allowed to have him onscreen, so actually having characters to work off of is likely why the writing is better. But one thing I have noticed is that the best/good/decent episodes have Richard Hatem involved in the writing room. Anyways I can't wait to see Red Hood in Season 3 and I hope that Jason Todd becoming Red Hood isn't bad like the 2 seasons I wasted watching Dick for him becoming Nightwing to STILL feel rushed. I can't recommend this show without first seeing Season 3, because rightnow Season 2 is not worth sitting through, it is a mediocre and at times terrible mess. But if you don't really care about spoilers you should check out Episode 4 and this episode because I do think they are really really good episodes of television.
Phineas and Ferb the Movie: Candace Against the Universe (2020)
What Happened?
This movie is straight garbage, it takes what you love about the show, the gags, the characters, the stories and it ruins all of it. The animation is bad, it looks like they might of outsourced it or something, the pacing is so bad, at the beginning everything is rushed and then in the middle everything is slow, I mean painfully slow. Multiple gags feel like they exist just to stretch the time lut and save money(they are the same shot, and nothing very complicated happens in the shot, same background, the character's might speak or one or two things within the frame will move and nothing else). I don't understand how this is rated so high and how critics gave it such a good review. Do yourself a huge favor and don't watch this, go rewatch Across the Second Dimension, don't let this movie ruin your childhood. I also feel as as if I left cons out so here's a few honorable mentions: unfunny humor, terrible music(yes in a Phineas and Ferb movie), Bajuelt sounds off, things happen for no reason at all. My rant is over... I am beyond disappointed with this movie.
Legends of Tomorrow (2016)
Listen Before You Judge The Rating
Alright so I'm just going to start this review off saying I didn't rate this show 7 stars because its emmy worthy or because the acting is the best possible(although the actors do help deliver the shows tone and have cute moments), but its not trying to be, Arrow, The Flash and Supergirl all tried their hardest to be taken seriously, sure The Flash is still funnier than Arrow but the writers did want you to take it seriously, this is the only one that right from the get go isn't trying to get you to take it seriously, in fact the first season is so campy, Wentworth Miller, the other guy from Prison Break and Brendon Routh are all standouts particularly, probably due to years of acting experience, but you can tell they really care about the material they have. Other reviews may have mentioned but yes, Season 1 is very very predictable, but give it a chance because if you love camp, comedy and fun action scenes(not John Wick level, think goofy Arrow with superpowers, an Assassin and a time traveler lmao), you'll love the show. Once you get past Season 1 you'll quickly realize that although at times it can be predictable the show can sometimes get so bonkers and absurd that it does suprise you and in the best and funnest way possible, now I know I did say they don't try to get you take it seriously from the get go and thats because they don't, but they do stop at least once or twice a season to give the character's and actors a chance to get emotional and it is very well deserved, I can guarantee that you will love the characters by the time you get through Season 1, and from then they just keep on improving. So are the villians any good? Well in the first season theres one and hes not really good honestly, but thats okay because the heroes are the main spotlight, but Season 2 and 3 have very good villians, so fear not there. Overall this show is a great time, don't go in expecting Breaking Bad, but also don't go in expecting Arrow Season 4. Its the only Arrowverse show thats stayed consistant in every season, including 4 from what I've seen. I'd say its worth a watch and if you don't want to watch the whole thing, at the very least give the first season a try.
